Another online storage question

Ive read a bunch of reviews and such, and it seems a little conveluted. I'll continue reading, but what Im looking for is an online storage option, doesnt need to be more than about 15 gigs, that will be accesable via http...I would be uploading from a smart phone via wifi, then downloading onto home PC.

Anything come to mind?

What are you using to send from your phone? If you use Amazon S3 or RackSpaceCloud, they both support POST, so you could write some code on a website (or grab code from the internets) that would let you submit a form that sends the files. Then that same website lets you browse.

Or depending on the smartphone (iphone, android, blackberry) you might find an app that will do the same thing without any coding on your part.

The nice part about S3 or Rackspace is they are pay as you go, you pay per GB of space used only.

You could also get your own website with a host that provides enough storage for you to store your files. You might need a small dedicated server, or a VPS to get that much room.

I'll be uploading pics and vids from a Touch Pro 2...thats an interesting idea about web space...I'll take a look at what Cox offers as a customer.

More suggestions welcomed, and thx elconejito I'll look into your suggestions.

Your choices are basically:

1. Host content at home (e.g. Apache)
- Cheap (free?), but reliability and network speed are problems.
2. Use a consumer online storage service (box.net, idrive, skydrive, etc)
- Designed for this especially, but interfaces are often proprietary. Box.net does offer convenient linkage to mobile devices though.
3. Use a developer online storage service (amazon S3 and rackspace, already mentioned)
- Flexible, but the interfacing part is up to you.
4. Use a web host / VPS
- Flexible, but can be unreliable or expensive depending on the quality of host you choose.
5. Online backup (mozy, backblaze, carbonite, crashplan)
- (Quite freaking) cheap GB wise, but I don't think mobile access is going to be possible.

I personally use a mixture of 4 and 5. I have used S3 before but storing dozens of gigs on it is not necessarily economical. I have a skydrive account (they give 25 gigs for absolutely free) but find the interface ... well, incredibly frustrating. That's putting it kindly.

"Use Live Mesh from any mobile web browser":
https://www.mesh.com/Welcome/howto/mobile.aspx

"Make sure you've already signed up for Live Mesh from your computer. Then, on your mobile phone, go to www.mesh.com and sign in using your Windows Live ID.* You'll see your Live Desktop tailored to fit your mobile phone's display. From here, you can choose to automatically sync pictures from your mobile phone with your mesh, access other folders, read news about your mesh, and more. "

[Edit: Looks like the Mobile service may not be in place yet.

If you send significant data across your WiFi provider's connection, be careful you don't exceed your "unlimited" Internet allocation.

I'll check out skydrive. Thats about all I would need. A frustrating interface I can live with since its only a temporary solution.

Apparently you pay $55 a year for unlimited space.

I dont need it for a year, and a $55 short term solution is too much I think.

If you want specific recommendations, I use http://www.crashplan.com and http://ramhost.us/. Crashplan has several ... innovative ... features over the competition when it comes to the software part.

Thanks jimhsu I'll look at those as well.

This looks interesting also. I wont need it until August, so maybe it will be in place then. I'll have to keep an eye on it. Also, I'll be using public wifi so Im not worried about limits.

edit: looks like Mesh wont work for me. It has a 5GB limit...I will need approx 15-20. Also, just browsing thorugh the website, it looks like a pic hosting type site...wont work also. I want to be able to upload rar files also. Per their FAQ as to what cannot be synced:

Files containing obscene or copyrighted material. (I will be storing obscene material.)
Files and folders stored on removable media (such as an external hard drive, flash drive, or USB drive) (I will be storing data stored on a micro SD card)

Obscene material? Have you checked out https://www.nearlyfreespeech.net/? They have a "no questions asked" attitude towards content short of flat-out illegal stuff, but the prices for your purposes might be a bit expensive.

A NearlyFreeSpeech.NET member site contains offensive content.

At NearlyFreeSpeech.NET we firmly believe that censorship is a dangerous and misguided approach to the problems of society. We believe that the price we pay for the huge number of fantastic sites we host are a few sites that we feel are significantly less fantastic.

We believe that the price you pay for living in what we hope is a free society is that when you encounter something offensive, you must resist the urge to censor it and instead research, investigate, and speak out passionately in opposition to it. That is the essence of free speech.

Please do not send us abuse complaints of this nature. We will discard them.
