one of the original big boxes here in california.

Bad thing about this is now I can think of 3 or 4 soon to be big empty department stores just in time for the winter freeze!

maybe we can throw some cots in them and convert them over to homeless shelters.

/shrug

Lord knows we have sooooo many homeless in Sactown...

This article may have been published today, but Mervyn's declared their BK and started liquidating weeks ago.

I think they were doomed once Target got rid of them.

The old style big box stores don't work anymore. Look at the troubles K-Mart and Sears are having.

Mervyn's has been floundering for quite a while. As PJ noted above, once Dayton-Hudson (Target) dumped them, they were doomed to fold.

As for K-Mart, anyone remember them filing bankruptcy a few years ago? Not only did they survive, they came out of bankruptcy and bought Sears. (and Sears has gone down in quality ever since IMO) The Sears repairmen who come work on our Kenmore appliances say that things have gotten far worse than people realize as far as overall product quality is concerned.
We stopped buying Kenmore-branded appliances 5 years ago.

There is a store about 2 blocks down from the hotel.

they have been holding "Going Out of Business" sales for the past three months.

Yet they are also hanging banners out for Hiring new people.

My suspicions are that some stores are being closed, merchandise sold off and/or shipped to other stores that are healthy.

Sears have been going down hill since the take over, although the local ones seem to be trying harder lately. K-marts are just horrible.

Kenmores are just rebandaged Whirl-Pools, I doubt Sears is ordering them to be cheaper than the Whirl-Pools.

Not all Kenmore appliances are Whirlpool anymore. they're outsourced to the lowest bidder, or to the bidder who will include the "extra features" Sears wants in their machines at the "right price."

Once upon a time, all Kenmore appliances were built by Whirlpool and they were among the best you could get...not anymore.
