Starts today (12/21/22):
The alerts stretch across 37 states, dipping as far south as the Texas/Mexico border.
and The cold will stick around for Christmas weekend, making this the coldest Christmas in roughly 40 years for portions of the Plains and Midwest.

Denver will go from a high of 47 on Wednesday to a low of minus 14 on Thursday morning.

Whiteout conditions are expected...


Seems like these 'once in a generation' weather events are happening almost every year 😱
 
Happens every year, it's called winter. 😛 They just keep finding new names for it.

Even Christmas Hallmark movies tend to incorporate this into them.
 
The polar vortex is a large area of low pressure and cold air surrounding both of the Earth’s poles. It ALWAYS exists near the poles, but weakens in summer and strengthens in winter. The term "vortex" refers to the counter-clockwise flow of air that helps keep the colder air near the Poles. Many times during winter in the northern hemisphere, the polar vortex will expand, sending cold air southward with the jet stream (see graphic above). This occurs fairly regularly during wintertime and is often associated with large outbreaks of Arctic air in the United States. The one that occurred January 2014 is similar to many other cold outbreaks that have occurred in the past, including several notable colder outbreaks in 1977, 1982, 1985 and 1989.


There are several things the polar vortex is NOT. Polar vortexes are not something new.

14 was our last ice storm, no power for 4 days so we're due. Have gas for the ginny and lpg for the logs. GTG.
 
Been visiting family in Canada near Vancouver and can confirm it is cold enough to freeze your nuts off. Not supposed to be this cold on the west coast.

10 to 12 inches of snow expected, but that's from Thursday through Saturday morning so it's not that bad. The temps and windchil Thursday night are gonna suck though.
 
Our weather isn't quite that bad...lows into the low 20s here, into the teens around Seattle. The bad part (for us) is a storm arriving sometime Thursday mid-afternoon with freezing rain. Here at the coast, we're expecting .25 to .5" of ice...then 3-4" of snow on top of it. Driving will be a mutha.
Our oldest grandson is supposed to fly in tomorrow from CA. I've been trying to get in touch with him to cancel the trip. We're about 130 miles each way from the airport...with some stretches that are known for being treacherous in the winter. Nope...not doing it.
 
Gonna set out a few extra suet cakes today for the flying feathered fecal factories.

Don't really want to have to go out tomorrow at all. Hoping to give them enough to hold out until Saturday when I'll do a quick in and out.
 
Fck...there went the power. Gonna have to go out and fire up the little generator.

Edit. Power out at 0310, back on by 0600. Apparently it was a pretty major outage affecting a large region. Cause must not have been TOO bad if they got it fixed already.

That said, i have family in WI, and just a few winters back, when I went to visit them, they had over 2 feet of snow on the ground, almost 3 feet, with very very tall drifts.

Good thing I don't usually drive to downtown Chicago weekdays or I'd could have been one of those unfortunate people.

The Seattle area ice storm will arrive overnight, today looks good so I am heading up there in a few minutes to hang out with the fam.
They are predicting up to 3/4" of ice through tomorrow morning in the south end where we are, which takes down trees, limbs, and power lines. I'll get extra generator gas on hand. Chainsaws are sharp and I have mix gas for those.
We've seen these things before, no joke. The power can be down for a day or two. We have an all electric house so that's going to suck. I do have propane in the RV so we can move in there for warm.
 
It's been unusually chilly around here (Bay Area) but today's the warmest in a while and it will continue to warm until we get a toasty Xmas day, probably reaching 67F in my yard. Meantime the nation shivers. I have no central heating, so the respite is nice. I've acclimatized, that's the nice thing about the seasons, they change gently, slowly. I wear more clothes during colder weather, duh.
