Oil sheen spreading from Gulf platform explosion

NEW ORLEANS, La. --The Coast Guard is saying that a mile-long oil sheen is spreading from the site off an offshore petroleum platform that exploded in the Gulf of Mexico off Louisiana.

The site of the explosion is west of where BP's massive spill occurred.

The Coast Guard said no one was killed Thursday in the explosion. The blast was spotted by a commercial helicopter flying over the site.

All 13 people aboard the rig were found floating in the water in survival gear

Chernobyl was an inherently unsafe design (positive void coefficient) that was being operated outside of procedure.

This is the part most people don't know about, positive void reactors are nowhere to be found nowadays (at least in the US as far as I know) which makes all the difference in the world in terms of failures.

Yahoo

The platform is a fixed petroleum platform that was in production at the time of the fire, according to a homeland security operational update obtained by The Associated Press.

The update said the platform was producing about 58,800 gallons of oil and 900,000 cubic feet of gas per day. The platform can store 4,200 gallons of oil.

stats on oil rig accidents

looks like this DOES happen all the time. in fact most of the minor explosions with no fatalities are ignored.

No it doe sNOT happen all the time. Your own link shows very few major incidents in the last decade.

Do you even read your own links. The major ones are from 1980, 1979, 1982, etc...

But yea they are just following it now.

Show me a rig that exploded and threw its crew into the water and had the coast guard pick them up that did not make the news in the US.

And all the incidents within the last 20 years (except the last two in the Gulf) have been in third world countries...

So a fire on an inactive oil platform now means an oil rig exploded?

Got it.

How you have the nerve to post on another oil rig thread is mind boggling.

Remember the last time?

And Jesus wept, even Fox news is calling it an "explosion".

According to that link between 1956 and 2010 there have been 149 incidents on oil rigs around the world. That's almost 3 major incidents per year. I'm curious, how do you define "all the time."

All of these incidents list them as: blowout, sinking, fire, collapse, hurricane, grounding...sounds pretty major to me.

So, destroying the environment in 3rd world countries is okay...as long as it doesn't happen near the U.S. right?

No, just that first world countries that care about their environment have put in place regulations that reduce the likelihood of these incidents from occurring.

The fact that we've had 2 incidents in the last year in the USA is indicative of how bad our regulatory infrastructure has fallen. Deregulation is turning us into a third world country :(

That I agree with 100% but I'd also be willing to bet that those rigs in the third world countries you referred to are run by the same corporations who are operating these rigs in the Gulf.

You want to know something funny? The rig operaters are suing the government to lift the drilling moratorium despite news like this. Crazy town!

err its like stopping all farming because a farm hand got his hand cut off in some equipment:p
i don't know about you, but no one i know is pulling a moratorium on driving:p so really, they just gotta keep drilling and get their sh*t together at the same time.

Its like recalling cars if some cars are reportedly having problems with their acceleration/braking mechanism.

:D
