Let's say you have a Mustang or Camaro (last 'gen') that has mods in it, but were a result of buying it used. Where do you take these to get maintenance? I am under the impression that local mechanics refuse to work on modded cars, am I correct?

Just a thought I had and am curious about.

Nah, they won't refuse but they will likely charge you more. Of course, if you don't know exactly what's been done to the car you'll be up a creek if they can't figure out which replacement parts to buy.

Theoretical. I drive a stock 96 Accord 🙂

it depends on the mods, and the job that has been done installing them. no one wants to bother with someone's hack job for liability's sake.

if the stuff is reasonable, of OEM or better quality, and done professionally, i don't see the problem. just don't expect someone to do driveability work if you've cammed it or done any other work to the engine controls or fuel delivery.

My mechanic will work on anything as long it won't blow up and burn his shop down. I've seen hot rods and rock buggies up on his lift before. Usually he charges book rate for work but if your car is modified to the point where it affects the repair he'll charge you by the hour.

Take it to ZaneJohnson MotorWerks, he'll fix it up so you can beat Vette's with it.

Any mechanic worth going to will not care about mods, if you are just looking for regular maintenance or to address a specific problem.

If it's a drivability, performance, or emissions issue that is related to mods in conjunction with a flash tune, you will have to see a tuner. A regular mechanic is only going to be able to diagnose physical mechanical and electrical problems and check that a sensor or something is either within factory spec or otherwise reasonable, but they aren't in the business of custom ECU programming.

For most things, most mechanics will work on any car. As exdeath said though, when it comes to smog testing, that's where things can get slim. If it's heavily modded, you can get to the point where qualified mechanics become slim.

If modded means an exhaust and a cold air intake, that's no big deal.
