Receitly bought a Buffalo WHR-G54S wireless router and matching Buffalo PCI adaptor. Box one is on XP and connected to the router with a common patch cable - Buffalo connectivity software package installed. XP wireless protocol in box one is turned off because the Buffalo software turns it off when the program installs. Box two has the wireless PCI adaptor installed with Buffalo driver software.

Both boxes connect to the internet just fine when hard wired. But box two will not connect using the wireless connection - there is a big X through the network connection in the system tray. The default configuration of everything is auto-detect so there is no hard IP address established. Any suggestions on how to get the darn thing to connect? I'm out of ideas and need help.

Thanks in advance.

Let me take a crack at it:

Is the network connection with the big X on it the wireless network connection? Double click on it and see what it says. If it says local area connection, then it means that you are not connected through your wired network.

On the box with the pci adaptor, if it says "wireless network connection", then click on "view wireless networks" and see if it recognizes the router's wireless signal.

I suspect, though, that the Buffalo software places it's own icon in the system tray and you should recognize it. If that is the case, then click on it and check if you can "see" the wireless signal.

Windows Zero is turned off to allow the Buffalo program to control the connection.

I even tried the other way around but nothing matters: No wireless adaptors are being detected.

So the question is, where to start looking for the problem? In the box hard connected to the router or with the wireless box? The adaptor seems to be installed okay, but it will not connect with the router.

Start finding out what is not working in the Network setting of the Wireless computer.

In General you can debug the Network Setting of the computer following these steps.

Step One. Check the Network parameters in the Computer?s Device Manager. Make sure that the drivers are installed correctly; there is No IRQ conflict, and No Ghost installation. http://www.ezlan.net/faq#ghost

Step Two.Verify Basic network setting in the OS: http://www.ezlan.net/Installing#verify
If the above two Steps indicates that every thing looks good but functionally it does not work.

Step Three. Check (and repair if necessary) the Socket Layers, Winsock, and or refresh the TCP/IP Stack. http://www.ezlan.net/clean#refreshnet

P.S. Make sure that the PCI Antenna is not masked between the Metal case and the wall.

While you debug, put it away from obstructions, and close to the Wireless source.
