Another MMO being set "Free"

Apparently Dungeons & Dragons Online is going F2P, with subscription option. Dunno what much else needs to be said, other than the "Free" accounts will be limited in various fashions. Note: The Eberron Unlimited title is being added to denote they're also apparently releasing a content expansion or something of the sort.

Limitations between VIP (Subscriber) and Free accounts.

It'll be interesting to see what is meant by limited. I played the beta and it was kind of interesting but there was only the city I take it that has been expanded since beta?

I said long ago that some of these niche games, like D&D/SWG, I would probably be very willing to pay about $5 per month just to log in a couple times as time willing to toy around with it. Given how low most MMOs are outside of WoW, not sure why there hasn't been a rush to go that route.

I liked D&D Online , loved the game play but thought it was rather short and not worthy of a monthly fee

Limited? Seems more like crippled as hell to me.

I wonder what happens if someone buys a new box and uses the free 30 days or if a paying account goes free. Do you still have all VIP things as of your last payment or what type of system do they have in place to remove the extras from your account?

I played DDO for about a year. It was quite enjoyable. I eventually quit because my internet connection (768/128) was too slow for raids. I was actually waiting for Module 9 to come out before joining again, as I've just upgraded my internet speed.

Pros:
Active combat. You actually run around and kill things. Attacking from behind or the side (or being attacked) actually makes a difference. Very fast-paced.

Lots of dungeons/instances - you can get to almost all of them within 5 minutes or less, no matter where you start from in the world. Many areas are located far away from the main city of Stormreach, but you instantly travel to them, so you don't spend a lot of time just traveling (unlike WoW).

TONS of character customization. You have 7 or 8 character classes, races, 6 attributes (STR, DEX, etc), skill points, and enhancements. You can multi-class, which leads to lots of great combinations.

Built-in voice chat.

Reputedly, the player base is generally more mature and helpful than in other MMORPGs.

Graphically, it's a beautiful world. But you really need to leave the starter city of Stormreach to see it.

The game emphasis is on getting a group together, and then getting into the instance within a few minutes. There is minimal time wasted running just to get into an instance. Mostly anyway.

Yes, there are dragons! and giants, trolls, ogres, orcs, kobolds, gelatinous cubes, and lots of monsters I've never heard of from my old pen & paper D&D days.

There is nothing quite like casting your very first "FINGER OF DEATH!" The bestest spell evah!

Cons:
It's not Dungeons and Dragons. It's based on D&D, but don't expect it to be especially faithful to the rules (any version).

I didn't get the feeling of being in a huge world (unlike WoW).

Built-in voice chat means you get some mouthy kids sometimes. You can mute them though.

The game is pretty much all PvE. They threw in some limited PvP to shut up complainers, but it's seriously gimped IMHO.

Soloing is virtually non-existent. Grouping is essential to success, although some people enjoy the challenge of attempting to solo dungeons. I never cared for dying 20 times in a row though.

Crafting system is very limited. The developers said that they wanted to minimize grinding, but players demanded crafting, so they threw it in. From what I've seen, crafting = grinding. Hate it.

Overall, if you like fantasy settings, give this game a try.

I strongly suggest starting with a melee character (e.g. fighter, or paladin). My first character was a wizard, and they don't really start getting powerful until level 8.

Should have been in the Forgotten Realms, I do not like having to learn new fantasy worlds.
Well, Cryptic is making a NWN MMO for Atari set in the Realms...

Dragonlance setting would be better...

Cant wait to try this game out again if there's a wave of new players.

It was one of my favorite MMO's of all time. Extremely interactive environments and I like how its setup FPS style. Unfortunately.. the game died because once you completed a dungeon.. completing it a 2nd, 3rd, 4th time became very boring, predictable and no fun.

If this game had a way of randomizing the dungeons when you enter I think it would still be very popular today. Unfortunately, it didnt.

I wouldn't call this "Free" anymore than games like Wizard 101 are free, you get a pretty basic set of access rights to the game, you're geography limited (in this case, VERY limited).

This game uses the same sort of instanced quest system that Guild Wars uses, a game that is completely free once you buy it. If I was going to play an MMO type game, I would just play that.

DDO was fun... the only annoyance I encountered was being the healer in pugs [most people wouldn't give up the healing wands if they dropped and the rest stations in certain dungeons were just too far apart]

Now that DDO is F2P, is anyone considering going back and checking it out?

I havent played in ages, but if there's a surge of people and activity i might consider scrounging up my old game discs and reinstalling.

I really liked the game before but lack of activity and looking for hours on end for a group of people to actually do anything killed it for me.

Anyone going back for another shot?

I tried out the trial this weekend, since the free version is still in beta. Just been going it solo thus far because that's how I'd likely play it, and it seems decent.
I've only died twice thus far 😛

This MMO still exists? I thought I read stories a while ago about how they were shutting down the servers.

Rumors of its demise have been greatly exaggerated?
