another LOTR question: where do orcs come from?

there seems to be no female orcs, orc kids, orc babies...so where do orcs come from? Do they all come out of the ground like the Uruk-hai?

I would imagine there are female orcs, babies, etc. you just never see them. Orcs are elves that Morgoth "twisted and mutilated" (per Saruman) so they probably have the same general kind of life cycle.

Back in the old days even before the sun was made, Sauron's master, Melkor, snared some of the very first elves and put his evil mojo on them and turned them into orcs. So it woud follow that they would have to reproduce in the same way. We usually see the orcs from the perspective of battle. I guess that the young and female orcs no not go to war. Maybe the female orcs look so much like the males that other folk can't tell them apart.

It wasn't really brought to light in the books. There might be something about it in the History of Middle Earth, series, but I don't know because I never read. It's just one of those things you're supposed to accept.

Anyway, the explanations I remember from one of the books was that orcs were made in mockery of elves, goblins were made in mockey of dwarves, and trolls were mocking ents. As far as how orcs are actually "made", I'm not sure. None of the books mentions orc women.

Isn't there a scene in FOTR in Saruman's place where they show an Uruk-hai being "born" out of the cave wall? It looked like a goblin was trying to cut him out of some sack or something.
