My car was hit today, the door needs to be replaced. My insurance deductible is $500, and that will probably be cheaper out of pocket, but I'm not sure if it will effect my rates in the long run. Should I just pay it out of pocket?

It's impossible to tell you how much it will cost without more information (car type, which door, pictures of damage, etc).

I'd go get a quote from a good body shop before you do anything. They'll be able to tell you if the door really needs to be replaced and if there is any other damage that will need to be taken care of. Honestly, I'd pay out of pocket if its just a few hundred past the deductible but mostly because its less headache. Any time you deal with insurance it becomes more complicated (have to use certain shops, usually have less control over exactly how they do the work on your car, less leverage on getting the car finished quickly, etc) .

Yeah, I can already estimate the damage to be a bit over $1000 based on other cars with similar damage that I've looked up online. I'm just curious if insurance can jack your rates when your car was hit while it was parked.

Call them and ask? I don't think they will raise your rates if it wasn't your fault, but I'm not sure on that either.

Man that sucks. Hopefully your car gets back in action soon! Although:

Not At-Fault Accident
A big misconception that people think is that when you get into an accident and it is not your fault your rates will increase. Some people are even afraid to notify their insurance company they have been an accident for fear that they will jack up their rates. This is absolutely false. No insurance company will increase your premiums for the reason that you are deemed “not at-fault” for the accident. Please re-read that sentence again before we continue.

I can't believe how many people don't know this...

It's because old people are stupid as fuck and they tell their kids the opposite of this. Lots of old people explicitly told me that insurance rates were based on how much shit happens to you, and that it didn't matter if it was your fault or the other guy's fault. Keep in mind none of these men have ever worked for an insurance company or a government agency and none of them knew anything.

Sorry to hear about that. My car was trashed by a hit and run too. My damage was about $5,500. I haven't gotten a premium increase yet but wouldn't be surprised to see one. The agent I spoke to said they sometimes will increase the premium based upon how much of a risk the driver is and if this kind of accident happens more than once a year.

You can have your premium increased with a new claim, you just may lose some discounts althouth rate will stay the same

I.e., i think state farm can remove accident free discount and or the star rating.

Your ins. Expert can tell you.

Quote today was $1700, so I went ahead and called insurance on it. They said my rate should not go up since it was parked when it happened, but something about my deductible not being the normal $500 since it was a hit and run. He didn't have any details but said my claims adjuster would explain when she calls.

every company treats a "claim" diffrently. Some companies just look at the overall number of claims and some go into detail.

there is a collision deductible and a comprehensive deductible. most people take the same price. I have a $250 on collision ( if i hit someone) and $100 comprehensive ( someone steals, burns, hits ).

I dont know how you do your policies but i think most take a LOWER comprehensive.

Nationwide said the deductible would only be $250. Works out in my favor as much as it could I guess.
