OMG I'm all bubbly and giddy I can hardly contain myself (I don't usually get like this!) Here's the story:

Me, my sister and her boyfriend went to go see Fast & The Furious after dinner. Yeah, I have no life so I hang out with younger siblings here in Charlotte but that's another story. Anyway, after the movie I was all juiced about driving fast and stuff so I decided I'd show my the kiddies just what a good ol' Swedish Brick can do (got a '94 Volvo 850 Turbo.) I don't really have any mods in my car, just the following:
-replaced the suspension with ipd performance springs, eibach shocks, and put in an ipd anti-sway bar
-put a K&N air filter in.
-replaced my worn exhaust with a new stock Volvo exhaust 2 months ago.
-engine is pseudo bored/stroked after 130,000 miles have been put on!

Now the theater is only one freeway exit up from my neighborhood--about 2 miles of straightway interstate. I'm the first one on the ramp so I flick the switch from 'Econ' to 'Sport' and I hit the gas (not a cloverleaf.) From straigtening out at 10mph, I've 'rocketed' to 85mph by the time I merge (yes, its an automatic.) I saw 3 cars doin around 70 in the right lane so I keep accelerating all the way through in the left lane and by the time I pass all 3 I'm doin 110. I get in the right lane, take my foot off the gas, flick the switch back to 'Econ' and put it in neutral for a bit. Now here's where the fun really starts! Apparently, one of the cars I passed is a new Mustang with some kiddies in it. They're not to happy bout this Volvo pullin in front of them at high speed. They think it 'means something'. I'm not sure if it was the 2nd or last car I passed but they get behind me and start tailgating hardcore, flashing hibeams and weavin' a bit (but stayin' behind.) I figure they want me to race. My exit is coming up. I barely 'gun' the car in Econ mode and the dude in his Mustang swerves into the left lane and takes off, thinkin' im gonna race with him. I put my right blinker on and pull into the exit lane instead. Before I start climbing the ramp my radar starts goin off. I look past the bridge just to see a blue&white merging onto the freeway...TURNING THE LIGHTS ON AS HE MERGES!!! Oh I was so tempted to get back on and watch but the 2 petrified teens in the back convinced me not to! So I went on home with a smile on my face!

- Would the Mustang have beat me? You betcha, even with a bad driver.
- Would I have been pulled over if I raced him? Most definately.
- Will I be doin 110 on the freeway again? Not for a looooonng time!
- Did I enjoy it? Hell yes!

Thats the problem with that movie, it does get oyu in the racing mood... Just dont forget that your car is not a suped up racer, but just a normal streetcar...

syzygy, its amazing what people will do when they're utterly bored outta their damn minds. I normally don't do crazy things like this, and like I said I probably won't do this ever again.

Congrats on endangering everyone else on the highway by going 110. You should be real proud of yourself. *claps hands for Mr. Jigga*

<< WOW! you pressed the throttle to the floor all by yourself? Incredible! >>

LOL. :D
It was an uncool thing to do with siblings in the car. What kind of example is that??
Take a look at those lambo pics posted earlier and think if you'd try that again. ;)

IBhacknU, actually there is some skill involved in drivin an auto-equipped turbo. You have to know when to let it boost and when to let it vacuum--it has to 'breathe' right. Plus you have to know when to let up on the gas so it shifts at the right spot. That said, I'm not the driver with mad skillz cuz I don't do this all the time!

Driving 110 with 3 other cars in another lane is hardly dangerous. Yes, it was a bad example to set but I only gunned it for about 4-5 seconds to pass those aforementioned 3 cars. I would NEVER compare myself to those 30-something rich kids in NY killing themselves, their loved ones and others by racing down an open-access street in afternoon traffic, crossing the median in the process. It IS important to differentiate. There's always a difference between endangering yourself and others and having 'good clean fun'!

That was dumb of you big time and all these posts prove that the minimum driving age should be raised even more to 18. I think its pathetic and dangerous to other drivers.

You better get that thing to a mechanic then. Mine are all pretty simple to drive. Push the pedal down farther for more boost and power, let up for less. No mystical voodoo magic here.

Oh I'm 22 by the way, but I agree wholeheartedly with raising the minimum driving age for a full license to 18. A learner's permit at 16 is all anyone needs, cuz honestly I don't wanna see any kids driving unless their parents are in the car with them and the sun is still up. For the record, I have NEVER been in a real accident. I hit an illegal fire hydrant backing up 2 weeks ago, and I hit a parked fullsize pickup with a stupid aftermarket oversize bumper while tryin to squeeze into a parkin spot 4 years ago. I have on speeding ticket on record, and I got that last summer when I was doing 80 in a 70 zone on an empty interstate. The only other time I took a car past 100mph was on I-485 back before it was completed (pure, virgin, baby smooth paved highway without another car in sight! Yes, idiots drag raced there but I just went solo for the sheer fun of it.) That was awhile ago, and I was younger then!

I haven't seen fast and the furious because it'll just make me laugh so hard.

those racing mods and lowered suspension stuff means crap to me. Cuz when you get into traffic, your car needs to stay on the road, but my friend's little '98 nissan multi (looks like a 1/2 sedan, 1/2 wagon, 1/2 minivan) will find its way onto the sidewalk and start driving on the curb!

I have to admit, my friend is a CRAZY DRIVER. But he'll get you places in 1/2 the time needed for a normal person to drive.

there was this one time where he needed to get to the street to the right of him. but there were no right turns for the next 3 intersections. But there was a small walkway that cuts in between the 2 streets, which also has stairs.

anyway, he was like, "ah, why not?", and then took the stairway with his car to the next street.... it's so much fun being the passenger when he's driving.

Mine works like this (sport mode):
- Squeeze throttle halfway down until the turbo needle just starts pulling past vacuum into boost range.
- Once the needle reaches the magic point, slam down on the accelerator and ride out the torque rush! This is the fun part!
- Once RPM needle hits 5500rpm, switch back into 'Econ', lift foot off gas momentarily to allow the shift and then push throttle to about halfway again.

If I just leave the foot on the gas from the get go, I get turbo lag for a good 5 seconds or more. The car doesn't seem to move anywhere fast at all. Is this simply a sign of an aging turbo or is something really wrong?

you shouldn't have any lag at all
It could be a worn turbo... could be millions of other things too
