I've been doing situps, crunches, and curls with dumbbells before and after running each night (one to two miles for now). I'm hoping to increase stamina and maybe tone my muscles a bit so I don't look so skinny (pic). I'm wondering what else I should be doing .. preferably things that don't require going to a gym. How many reps are you doing?
If you work out with light weights and do a lot of reps, you'll get skinny like that. You need to do heavier weight and less reps. Put on as much weight as you can do 8 times.
