If Wal Mart hadn't donated anything, people wouldn't be remembering all their negative feelings towards it, that's what's sad.
A good deed by a company causes many to remember their hatred for that company in a time when others are in need.

Well said. It's important to point out that huge coporations don't do anything in this arena without first calculating the kind of impact it will have - not only on the people it will affect, but on their own image, and most especially....their own interests.

There are no Wal-Mart's where I live, so i've never shopped there. I did not approve of their decision to build a Wal-Mart on top of an ancient aztec heritage site in Mexico. If they're anything like Target however, its likely that the majority of their clientel would look upon their donation with favor. It makes sense - elicit a warm fuzzy feeling from people who like to read news blurbs "Wal Mart donates xxx amount of money", at the same time protect their own interests and give themselves an image boost.

Just a funny fact - every hour or so, a lawsuit is filed against Walmart.

Clayton homes just donated 1,800 new mobile homes (their entire inventory of NEW single wide homes) to victims of the NOLA hurricane. A great gesture! :)

Estimated value (not counting delivery and setup): $18,000,000!!!

15,000,000 / 189,000,000,000 = 0.0079%

That $190B is revenue. If you were to compare WalMart's donantion to one's salary, you would need to use Walmart's gross profit, not total revenue.

Huh? That's not their revenue, that's their market cap, or the total value of all outstanding shares (up to $191.08 billion today). Gross revenues were $298.46 billion. Gross profit was $68.20 billion. Text

Regardless of how much it is, it's nothing to them, really. I have had a few friends that worked at Wal Mart and or Sam's club. Doing exactly the same job, when they started working for Kroger or Miejer's, or other union store, they more than doubled their take home pay, would get a pension if they worked long enough, got good medical and dental benifits, and had another thing that Wal Mart workers don't have, job security. One guy my dad hired worked for some other company as a store manager, he quit to work for my dad as an assistant manager because he got about 25% more pay, and he worked there for almost 40 years.

Wal Mart is running those stupid ads to keep the pressure off from all the heat they are taking due to their unfair employment practices. And to keep the unions from getting "traction". Whatever money they donate to the hurricane victim relief is cheap positive publicity for them.

My father owned a store that was non union. He kept the unions out by paying a decent wage and benefits, etc. His lowest paid employees made 20 years ago, what Wal Mart pays TODAY. Not to mention the benefits they had that Wal Mart people don't get. It wasn't all that hard to do, I'm sure Wal Mart could do what a single store could do..and people would WANT to work there, not just because they have to.

Until they stop their evil ways, I consider the company as about as scummy as they get.

18,000,000/1,800=10,000 a unit

that seems pretty low price per unit, don't those things go for more than that?

The cheap single wides actually don't. Some of the low end double wides acutally go for around $20,000 or so. The high end versions (double wide) go for $64,000 and that's for 2,500 sq/ft.

A truly great gesture, but the manufactured home market has been in the toilet since about 2000 and getting worse. The problem is that no bank wants to lend on them anymore.

Wal-Mart is not a monopoly. Neither legally nor by the definition of the word. They hold only ~20% of the US retail store market share, and they do not have the ability to put upwards pressure on prices against market forces (like Microsoft, for example, which is a monopoly, was able to keep the price of its products high when all other prices in the PC market were falling). Quite the contrary, Wal-Mart's effect on the marketplace has been a strong downward pressure on prices and costs, which is only good for consumers. True, their ultra-competitiveness has taken out a number of uncompetitive businesses along that way, but that is not monopolism, that's just business.
Yet just business, just the stinking filthy competitive dog eat dog family business eating mangy wolf business created by under regulated capitalism practiced in our violence ridden society. Perfectly normal. A leach donates a drop of blood. What heroes. The society they prey in and harvest like ants is like it is because everybody is so poor then need to save thirty cents. Stab your world for a bargain. Makes perfect sense. You see Wolf-Mark when you see the poor dead in their attics.

US GDP = ~12 Trillion Dollars

I wouldn't be offended if Australia didn't donate a dime, but I'm happy that they did.

it's not evil or anything, just more pragmatic than benevolent.

Bill Gates has given more money to humanitarian causes than Wal-Mart ever will.

yet people hate him and his company too.

Moral of the story is: you cant please liberals because they hate "evil" corporations without reason. No matter WHAT Gates/Walmart/whoever does, its an evil right wing capitalist venture.

Sure, they'll say "good job... i guess".. but they wont ever herald them.. because corporations that thrive within a capitalist society is the liberals core diametrical enemy.

for the liberals to be right, the capitalist system must fail. So these companys having power or influence is a very bad thing in their mind.

The USA, being the biggest proponent of capitalism must fail for the liberals to accomplish their goals. Which is why they want America to fail in Iraq, we're spreading democracy and capitalism, they also have dual interest in stopping that as well as stopping Bush from being successful.

Perfect example of what I'm describing

Does it get any more extreme? "Stinking filthy", "violence ridden society" (yes its only our society that has violence, just like how we have mass genocides occuring as happens in africa.. we are just so murderous....), a "leach"?! LOL
And i bet people who think this way are the biggest leaches on the system of all. But they want the GOVERNMENT to feed them money and take care of them. Forget saving money, we have social security (that the democrats refuse to reform even though it needs it)

Modern liberals= the death of personal responsibility.
Its either slaverys fault, the white mans, and as of late its all Bush's fault. Right. Too bad they gambled on that idea last election and now hes a 2 term President because of that gamble.

Wal-Mart stepped up to the plate no matter how much they earn and those at the top that made these donations made them for the right reasons I believe. They made them because they realize that their fellow countrymen were in need and they had the resources to help.

As to your rambling....Dude, here's a quarter....buy a clue with it.

Liberals hate corporations business practices....not the existance of corporations themselves.

Wal-Mart has continually abused the system and gone as far as shutting down stores completely to avoid the presence of unions which would force them to increase their wages. That is evil. Hell, that is almost the Webster-Merriam definition of evil.

Gas companies have continued to raise prices at a clip that is over a 2:1 percentage increase of what their cost increases have been. That is evil explotation of the consumer.

As for the comments about personal responsibility being something that liberals hate, I have a couple of questions for you.....

Which party has continually tried to get regulations eased so that corporations can take advantage of laxed environmental controls to avoid responsibility to their surroundings?

Which party tried to overhaul the ethics committee rules in the House to avoid having their members investigated?

What party does the President who refused to testify under oath about the events that led up to and occured after 9/11 belong to?

What party did Ken Lay, Geoffrey Skilling, Dennis Kozlowski, Bernard Ebbers and the majority of the other CEOs, CFOs, etc. involved in the biggest corporate scandals donate the majority of the cash to?

Fellow countrymen? Being an apparant liberal, you must know how tied up with the Chinese government that Walmart is right? I'm a fairly conservative guy and I dont support the blatant and outright disregard for the american worker those guys that run wally world participate in.
They dont even try to buy American made products anymore. In fact, WalMarts CEO said on national television if you dont build in China.. you dont sell at Walmart.
In the name of keeping costs low as possible.. but its more than likely part of a behind the scenes handshaking with the chinese government officials.

The money they gave? More of a way to say "sorry for selling out our nation.. notice we dont even advertise that we buy American whenever possible like we used to advertise.. yeah.. we're sorry.. take a miniscule portion of the profits we've made from selling out the USA at every opportunity possible"
Other corporations do at least try to produce product in America.

John Deere for instance. And part of their success is due to being "so American".
WalMart no longer can use the red, white and blue colors without Red bleeding all over the place.

As to your rambling....Dude, here's a quarter....buy a clue with it.
It wasnt rambling, it was fairly concise in explaining how people like you think.

Liberals hate corporations business practices....not the existance of corporations themselves.
Could have fooled me. It is the existence of corporations regardless.
Reason? A corporation exist for the sole purpose of generating profit. That means that at the end of the day

Wal-Mart has continually abused the system and gone as far as shutting down stores completely to avoid the presence of unions which would force them to increase their wages. That is evil. Hell, that is almost the Webster-Merriam definition of evil.
Thats not evil. Unions are the evil.
The unions are a large part of the reason globalization has taken hold. It costs General Motors ONE TENTH of the cost to build in China as it does here in the USA.
Most companys (besides WalMart) will TRY to build in the USA if its price-competitive enough to do so at all.. but at 1/10th the cost.. the North American price structure has failed.

Unions had their time, that time is long over. Its destroying America.
Soon a lot of uneducated Americans with good Union jobs will have no jobs. Pay cuts and benefit cuts are necessary or the corporations will continue to exit.

Theres no way around this. Unions and the government will have to make the USA more cost-competitive or die.
If they dont, instead of a pay-cut, they will be without a job at all. But Unions appear to be willing to sink the ship they float with.
Its a shame.

As I move up my corporations ladder, every chance I've gotten I've pushed robots and outsourcing. Anything to prevent a new union job. Its not like we dont offer immediate 30-year retirement for those who lose jobs, and have always offered 100% payment of any higher education endeavors that someone takes.
But you'd be amazed at how lazy and disregarding of education many Americans are today. Its pathetic. Can't even hand it to them. But we need people to create the robots and keep them running.. so there are plenty of jobs there.. just requires the population to become more educated than most are currently willing to become.

The day of running a hammer and making good money is soon to be over. Sorry to tell you, and the unions.

Gas companies have continued to raise prices at a clip that is over a 2:1 percentage increase of what their cost increases have been. That is evil explotation of the consumer.
Evil is a misused word there. Though a liberal would consider "evil" to equate to profit in nearly every.

There are unethical businesses, like the gas situation and walmart. But not evil.
Thats calling capitalism evil, because walmart and the gas companies are totally capitalistic as they should be.
Not evil, they have to turn a profit and make money or die. No jobs is worse.

As for the comments about personal responsibility being something that liberals hate, I have a couple of questions for you.....

We could go back and forth on that forever, like anything. But its the liberals who are always saying the wrath of katrina is someone elses fault. Either bush's or whoever.. thats ridiculous.. in the end if you dont get up and get out of town its your own decision.
You choose to live in a disaster ridden area, you deserve to face the consequences. Its not 1430AD anymore.. we know that a place below sea level is a dangerous place to be sitting.
Thats where the buck needs to stop.
Usually its the conservatives that agree with me more often than a liberal on that statement.
