Say I have a girlfriend from last year and we went on a trip. Say we broke up in May and I'm not with her anymore. If I were to tell a story, which would be correct?

"I went to Hawaii with my ex-girlfriend last year" <- This associates the past trip with the now present Ex, so isn't that a change in tense?

or

"I went to hawaii with my girlfriend last year" <- This is the past trip with the past relationship

or

"I went to Hawaii with my girlfriend last year, but we broke up in May"

The first one sounds the best out of the three that you listed.

What about this one:
Last year I traveled to Hawaii with a former girlfriend.
