Another ebayer trying to earn extra bucks on shipping costs...

Well I emailed the guy asking if he had a selling price for the item, because he did not have a buy it now option and I wanted to make sure. So he replies that he wants $80 shipped and he'll end the auction early. He then sends another one saying he meant $80 + shipping. So I say thats cool, and email him my zipcode so that he can calculate the price of shipping. I then get his email back saying it will be $10 in shipping costs and I thought that sounded fine. However I went back to his auction and in the description, he clearly states that his shipping is a flat out $7.

So now this guy says he wants $10 for shipping charges for me, when in his auction he stated $7 was the shipping price. Now it's only $3 difference, and I know it's not alot of money, but the principle of the matter is that it's not right. I most likely am still going to go for it and get the item because its a great price. However, do you think it's wrong practice what this guy is doing?

EDIT: Oh yea, and his reply after I pointed out the $7 flat shipping on his item desription was that "he's ending the auction early, plain and simple" so he thinks it's okay to raise the shipping costs.

The problem is that people on ebay try to get another buck or two by raising the costs of shipping. Like I said, the $3 is not the problem, it's just the idea of people trying to get more $$ by increasing shipping costs. I just think it's messed up.

Consider the price of the item, with all charges included. Never mind if it's $100+free shipping, or $1+$99 shipping, just consider the overall cost.

Is that price reasonable? Do you think it's as good a deal as you could get? If so, buy it.

I understand what you mean about the principle of the thing, but one buyer isn't going to change the thousands of sellers who overcharge on shipping.

People who complain about shipping costs that are disclosed up front annoy me.

What if my shipping cost was the lowest on ebay and I still made 10 bucks on shipping becuase of my huge fedex or UPS discount. Would you still complain that you got ripped off and that shipping costs were too high? After all, I'm still making money off you on shipping.

The philosophy behind high shipping costs is simple. When it comes down to the end of an auction most poeple see a price and some people will see a low price in haste and overbid on the item without looking at shipping. If you're one of these dumb ones you deserve to be taken advantage of.

All you need is some grump to come in here and say something like, "Ill give you $3.00 just to STFU". Since thats not going to be me, as someone pointed out, the guy is ending it early for you. Consider it a convenience fee. Otherwise place a bid and see if you win. You will only be obligated to pay the $7.00.

People also offer shipping discounts or free shipping w/Buy it now. If someone places a bid on the item w/o buy it now, then that deal is off and standard shipping applies.

Good luck....and STFU! 😉

And there's, just so much protection when you buy through ebay.

People sell things on ebay to make money. That's the point of the whole thing. Why complain about him wanting to make money? Just don't buy from him if you don't want to pay his offered price. It's not like he's selling a dollar item with $99 shipping.

When you buy outside of eBay's jurisdiction, you're working on the honor system. When you buy within eBay's confines, that organization has power to do at least something.

Simple solution. Win the auction and get it shipped for $7. Then stop whining about it.

I understand this, but realistically, there is very little they will do to help someone.

It's annoying, but consider shipping as part of the product. If OVERALL you're getting a lower price than you could get elsewhere, it's a good deal.

Like the OP said, it's not about the money. It's about the principle.

He is just trying to milk you for as much money as he can get. There isn't much of an inconvenience to him. He'll save on the final value fees anyway by ending the auction early at a lower price or cancelling all bids.

you guys are all missing the point...well most of you...i would be a bit upset too, but not really. its not about the 3 dollars, its the principle...

if it IS REALLY about the principle, than the OP should choose NOT to buy it, but in his post he indicated that even with the extra $3.00 shipping cost it is still a bargain (and the reason he is even bothering to ask that the auction be ended early is because he doesn't want to be outbid), hence it really isn't about the principle.

STFU, quit whining. again, if it was about principle, don't buy it.

Read the thread next time, k?

I think it sucks. If he wanted the extra $3, he should have had it in the listed shipping price, not tacked it on because he wanted $3 more.
$10 listed is fine, but adding on at the end sucks.

I don't see the problem with padding shipping + handeling costs. first, most buyers don't take into account the fact that boxes and packaging cost money; not much, but there is a cost assosiated with it. plus, it's a way of recouping e-bay and paypal fees.

money>principle

well like it or not, it sounds like he did you a favor by ending the auction early for you. that way, it may have helped him too but you do acknowledge the pricing is more than fair enough. he could have told you ahead of time if he realized you not noticing the $7 flat part tho, that aint cool 🙁
