Got another one for ya.

So I got the deal were I get the free DVR but as it turns out it's the non-tivo model (R15) and it apparently isn't as good.

So here's my question, can I still purchase a Directv TIVO unit (R10) from someplace else (like ebay) and install that and use that as my DVR instead?

Yes, you can buy your own. I would suggest you get something other than an R10 though. HDVR2 and DSR7000R would be OK, but something like the Hughes SD-DVR40 (or 80) would be better since you're not screwed if you lose the access card because those models have a redeiver ID (RID). All Series2 DirecTivos can be hacked easily (except for the R10).

Either way, make sure you get the access card when buying a used unit. Replacing it costs money if you need one, and DirecTV won't issue new cards for non-RID units (such as HDVR2 and DRS7000R)

If you would like more info, PM me.

To anyone who can advise:

Here's my situation:

- I live in an apartment complex that has directv piped in (like cable usually is), with a dish on top of my building that I cannot access (this dish feeds 600+ apartments)
- I rent a directv box from a third party company that handles the dish on top of the building and the wiring in all the apartments
- Single line from the wall, which is split for terrestrial signal (local channels) and directv

My problem:

I want to get one of the DirecTV DVRs from costco, for $85. The problem is that for dual-tuners to work, I need two separate lines from a dish. The problem is that's impossible due to apartment wiring.

Are there splitters/doublers that can provide a DVR box with two separate signals from my single coax cable so I can can utilize the dual tuner capability of a DVR box?

Thanks!!
