Another dead power supply...

I started with an Enhance 500W PSU...bearing in the fan went bad and it sounds like a freight train now. Being impatient and not wanting to be without use of my computer for a week or more, I bought a new power supply to replace it before RMAing it (I'll sell the one I get back or something).

The replacement was an OCZ 700W GameXStream. It died overnight, under system idle conditions. So I put the Enhance PSU with the bad bearing back in for the meanwhile, and the system is up and running again.

I'm running an E6400 OCed to 3.6 Ghz w/ 2 SATA HDD's and an X1900XT for the video card. I don't think that would be enough to overload either PSU, so I'm guessing I've just ran into some bad luck.

At this point, price isn't much of an issue. I want a strong, reliable PSU (preferably an efficient 700W unit in case I want a DX10 vid card soon) thats of very high quality. I thought the OCZ was that unit, though I was surprised that it was noticeably lighter than the Enhance (to me that usually indicated poorer quality).

I would go with a 700W Enhance unit, but I've heard they're absurdly loud. I don't need an ultra-quiet PSU, but nothing that'll keep me up at night with an annoying whine.

Suggestions?
 
I prefer the Seasonic S-12 600W
I also like Enermax Liberty 620W

These are my top recommendations and there will be others too.

SLi DX10? If so your going to need something like the TT Tough Power 750W. If your not going to do SLi DX10, then the 500W Enermax Liberty is good. Corsair HX520W is another good option.
 
There is NO warrenty sticker to break/cut on an Enhance, Silverstone or Enermax.

Open your Enhance and replace it with a unit of the same cfm and/or wattage.
The stock fan uses a two pin plug. Unplug it, solder splice in the new fan, plug it back
into it's socket. Some heat shrink or tape should be put over the splice.

I'm running an Enermax Liberty 620W and I couldn't be happier. I hear the new Corsair is also a very good and reliable PSU. Of course if price is not the issue go for the grandaddy of them all and get a PC Power & Cooling 850W or 1K.

Why? If he isn't doing high-end DX10 SLi/Crossfire this isn't needed.
 
I just got and installed the Seasonic M12 700W. It is very quiet and well behaved. Not a problem noted. Good steady temps and voltages. But . . . it is a bit pricey, even at Newegg.
 
I too like my Liberty 620 even though I had to RMA its predecessor after it went out with a CRACK!! (spark noise woke me up and there was that nice puff of blue smoke). Seems like this was a problem with some early ones but the newer ones have got this fixed.

You had a Lib620 blow up? :Q

Now I'm concerned as I have one powering an FX60 system that's heavily loaded. I just installed a 700W Seasonic (the new modular one) on this brand new C2D system and it is MUCH quieter than the server power supply that I was testing it with. The 12V is a little low (11.85V) compared to the other PS that always had 12.1 or so but that other PS could've been a little hot. It had 36A on a single 12V rail.

he has a pretty high end/power hungry system as it is. why not get the best psu available if you can?

Maybe quality and reliability? :laugh:

PC P&C has an excellent "mid range" unit now - the Silencer 650 - you can grab for around $160. That would be my recommendation.

The problems with OCZ don't surprise me but Enhance does as those units are pimped and recommended pretty heavily around here.

A Google search at the time revealed that there were a few instances of early Liberty 620 PSUs blowing up. The good thing is, it took nothing else with it so it did its job in that sense. Its replacement is holding so far. BTW, it blew very early in its life; if yours has been there for quite a while, you should be safe.

Been in use since 04/06. 🙂

Hope I never see the magic smoke. That's only allowed on the stage. 🙂

His current system is drawing less then 400W off the 12V rail. A single DX10 card can be powered by a 450W PSU, and low/mid end DX10 SLi can be run on a 700W PSU. As I said before:
