Another build me a rig with $1,900 to blow!

This is my first post but I've been lurking here (from work 😛) for weeks now.

Anyways, I've recently gotten a bonus from work, and now that this months bills are already paid for, I'm looking into building another gaming rig. Havnt built my own computer in nearly 2 years, so I'm basically 2 years behind in current hardware knowledge.

The rig should be strictly for gaming/storage!. I actually have 2 grand to blow, but, I dont want to go over that, since shipping for a full rig would be about $100.

Thanks fellas!

edit: I should add, that this rig will be built from the ground up, so I need case, fans, PSU, etc....

Are you planning on keeping anything (keyboard, monitor, hard drive, DVD drive)?

That factors into the costs.

I will be keeping my DVD burner, keyboard, monitor, mouse, and speakers, but thats it. The rest of the goodies I need.

edit: I'll be OC'ing a bit, but nothing extreme, I'd like to keep the PC running efficiently reliable for longer than a few months 😛

Storage is very cheap these days (compared to two years ago), how much storage are you talking about having. You can pick up 5 250GB drives and run them in RAID-5, you'd have a terabyte of storage and rundudancy for a little under $600.

For gaming, Im not too big into that, so Ill leave someone else to make recommendations there.

$1684

However, if you goto the evga website i believe you can still get the 7800gtx with a free motherboard deal.. that cuts $200 off the cost.. If you can still get that deal, I would jump on it even if you have not picked the rest of the computer out yet.

Ooooh

Athlon X2 4400+
DFI LanParty NF4 Ultra-D
GF 7800GT(X)
either: 1 GB OCZ VX4000
or 2GB Mushkin HP3200
Seagate 7200.8 or WD's new 250GB SATA drives

Yes, I wouldn't limit that machine with an 80gig drive if you're going to be getting good parts. I would probably go with a different model vid card, save some money, 2 x 200 or 250g SATA hard drives, different cpu (possibly the 4000+), and it would still come under the previous price.

He has a buget of 2k, so he should get the best parts that he can afford. I would go with top video card (well I did on my system 😛). Unless he wants to wait a month for a ATI solution. However, if he can hook up with that free motherboard deal it is a no brainer.. no matter how you want to spin it, the savings in just the mother board alone is worth buying the 7800

Athlon 64 x2 4200+ or 4400+ (depending on what your budget leaves you)
eVGA geforce 7800gtx
dfi lanparty/gigabyte/msi motherboard (your preference)
OCZ 1GB PC3200, the lowest latency version
WD raptor 74GB HD
WD/seagate/samsung 200GB+ HD

i dont think i forgot anything important

Seagate 7200.8 250-300-400GB

I recommend the 250 or 400 gb Seagate drive. Those are the two that use 133gb platters. The others are still on 100gb platters.

How about Crucial Ballistix? Those are the damn best 2 x 1gb sticks ever.

Thanks guys, most of the parts recomended, I already had in my shopping cart, lol, I just wanted to ask here to make sure what I was getting was good.

Thanks again.

I see alot of recommendations for the X2, I thought that it didnt really provide any advatages in gaming, certainly for the price. Wouldnt he be better off going with a single core A64 and putting the money elsewhere, like a nice 2005FPW?

if you want to see the X2 vs single core debate goto the overclock forum... X2 is well worth the cost.. I will not buy another single core processer ever..

Here you go.

Epox 9NPA+Ultra
AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+
Thermalright XP-90 w/ 92mm Panaflo
crucial 2GB (1GBx2)
eVGA 7800GT w/ BF2
Creative Audigy 2 Value
Hitachi 7K250 250GB
NEC ND-3540A
Lite-On 16x DVD-ROM
Antec P180
Seasonic S12-600
Hyundai L90D+
Logitech Z-5300e
Logitech MX518
Logitech Elite keyboard
Floppy

You can look at other cases from Antec, Lian-Li, Silverstone and Cooler Master. Also often times Dell has coupons where you can get a Dell 2001FP or something else for really cheap. I was not taking stuff like that in account in the above configuration though. Also there is an LCd buyers guide here.

Can you link me to the thread with that debate?

Or can you briefly explain why it's benificial for gaming?

Thanks 🙂

That is one of the many. Very briefly the X2 is very competitive in gaming compared to the single core with all the added benifits of the second cpu avaliable.

-- faster switching in and out of games.

-- many ppl run extra processes in the background while playing a game (think of something like encoding or burning a dvd while playing a game)

-- First SMP game comes out in Nov.. the next unreal game engine smp enabled.. X2 is just more future proof. (I have heard rumors of the DOOM 3 engine releasing SMP biniaries to compete)

I disagree with several recommendations in here regarding motherboard choice. Many have recommended the DFI mobo, which is great for overclocking, but for someone who is not interested in any overclocking, might an ASUS or MSI be a better choice? I would recommend the MSI NEO-4 Platinum - it comes with lots of documentation, easy troubleshooting, and tons of extra little cables and bits which just make things easier.

As others have said, grab the 4400+, 7800GTX, and make sure you get 2x1gig of memory. If you're not overclocking, just save the scrill and get some Value form Corsair or OCZ. If you end up going against my recommendation and getting the DFI motherboard, make sure that memory is some flavor of OCZ. I'd recommend Seasonic for the powersupply, probably get the 600W and never have to worry about it. Combined with the Antec Sonata case, and a Zalman CPU cooler - if you're into that kind of thing - you could end up with a abnormally quiet PC - something you will really appreciate over time.

Enjoy!

MSI Neo4 Platinum $140
X2 4400+ $550
2x1GB Value Ram $180
Seagate 7200.8 250GBx2 $310
Antec Sonata $100
Seasonic 600W $130
eVGA 7800GTX $500

=$1910

If you want to save some cash, take out one of the 250GB drives. I use a 120 and haven't filled it.

I disagree with the DFI choice also. The OP said he may do a little overclocking and the DFI may require a bit of tweaking to get it to work properly. I suggest the DFI to the enthusiast who wants to push the most out of his system and doesn't mind having to troubleshoot problems. The Epox I mentioned though is a great overclocker also.

why would it be a better choice if its more than an ultra-d?

Mainly stability and the fact that the DFI may require some tweaking to get it to work properly.

I still recommend the Epox though.

may, might, could..... whatever. every board may, might, could have problems. stability? i dunno, mine run 24/7 folding or gaming or burning or everyday stuff.

4 dfi nf4 installs and not a single issue here.
