PUEBLO, Colo. - Colorado sheriff's deputies shocked an "out of control" 10-year-old child with a Taser and arrested him.

Pueblo Sheriff's Capt. Jeff Teschner said Wednesday that the boy was not hurt when deputies took action Monday after arriving at his foster home, where he was reportedly destroying property.

Teschner says deputies were justified in their use of force. The deputies say the youth threatened them with a pipe and a stick, and threw a piece of wood at them.

"This lad, we have a long history of (him) running away. I don't know what his entire psychological profile is, but obviously he has emotional distress," Teschner told The Pueblo Chieftan.

The boy was arrested on suspicion of menacing with a deadly weapon.

Last month, a police officer in a small Arkansas town was fired after using a stun gun on an unruly 10-year-old girl, not for using the Taser but for violating department policy by failing to use the camera attached to it.

As always, it's clear what he did to deserve the taze. Good job officers for handling the situation without endangering yourselves or the suspect.

"threatened them"

Now plural cops can't bring down 10 year olds without tazers. Talk about the pussification of america!

Forgive my ignorance, but is it true that tasers pose no danger to the life of a 10 year old?

Simple rule of thumb. Unless the ten year old has a knife, gun or black belt in karate, don't tase them.

Or at least, make it mandatory to tase the cop afterward so he can then say, "Thanks for tasing me. It is much safer than trying to restrain a ten year old kid"

1 million volts is not endangering the suspect? I've felt 120 before, I would not want to feel a million unless I was dared to do it for money, even then... I think I'd pass.

If the cop can't handle a 10 year old with his/her bare hands, he/she should not be a cop, period.

Sounds like the kid needs a serious whuppin'.... If you allow kids to act up without setting limits (beyond which are consequences more severe that your standard "go take a time-out"), you're going to create unruly monsters.

Volts are nothing if there's no amperage behind it.

120v is typically 15-20 amps at the outlet.
From the internets:
Tasers have less than .02 amps, which is 30 times less than the lethal dosage of .7 amps.

A static discharge is more than 120v.

You realize that every time you get 'shocked' from carpet and touching metal that it's several thousand volts right? Current is what kills.

True but volts also have a big determination in the pain, and can screw with the heart. When dealing with 120, just because a breaker may be rated for 15, 20, or even 40, does not mean that's the amperage going through you. Whether you put a paper clip in a socket or go touch the main bus bar at the panel, one is not going to hurt more then the other (unless you touch both bus bars then you're getting 240...).

A computer power supply is quite a few amps once past the transformer, but touching the 12v rails is not going to do anything to you.

Static discharge can hurt, but it's such a short moment it's not the end of the world. When such high voltages are forced on someone for long periods of time it can have bad effects on the heart and probably the nervous system. I think they should treat tasers slightly a step below the nightstick as far as danger goes, instead of treating it as a toy. It's a good tool to have, if it's not abused. Some situations can value using it, such as a person that physically cannot be contained such as a drunk guy being violent.
