Not trying to badmouth Newegg but I guess people can't see the bold red text that says "One Day Sales" on Newegg's homepage, listed under practically every item when they have another one day sale.

That card should be very close to what a ATi Radeon 9000 performs, and you can find it and what your GF3Ti200 does here.

IMHO: not much of an upgrade, as you will need a 3+ GHz cpu to get a decent frame difference. You might want to look at those same card with slower cpus here.

About the same as the Geforce4 Ti4200 (sometimes a little worse, sometimes a little better). But it does support DX9, and has a better memory management system than the older Geforce4's. You would probably find it a nice upgrade.

Weird... it didn't put any text in here then it wasn't here when I checked the forum again... I guess that's what happens when I'm using a school mac while in class...

The ti4200 outperforms the 5200 in nearly all games... The only place it loses out is in some dx9 benchmarks. From every review I've seen the 4200 is the better card.

I bought a cable modem for $46 + shipping of $5 on one of their "one day" sales...the day after the one day sale, they had it for the same price...but with no shipping. sale indeed...

I just snagged the Lite-on 16x DVD-ROM for $27 w/ free ship. Should do well for ripping purposes.

With the new drivers I think it pretty much catches up, well, I guess with a 5200 with 128bit bus, the 64bit bus one still lags behind some. I'll double check my findings, in either case, it's a better card than his GF3Ti200.

Well, that WOULD make sense considering that's the only real difference (that being the inclusion of DX9-capability). If you match up the specs, the 5200 Ultra matches the Ti4600 in bandwidth and clockspeeds exactly. The performance isn't comparable, though.

I think the 9200 SE cards are a big waste of money. $70 for a 128MB 9200 non-pro isn't bad, but 9200 SE performance is pretty bad. Here's a cut and paste of my post from the FW newegg 1 day sale thread:

The 9200 SE runs at 200MHz core speed, and has 64-bit 166MHz DDR memory (333MHz effective), 2.7GB/s bandwidth

The 9200 non-pro runs at 250MHz core speed, and has 128-bit 200MHz DDR memory (400MHz effective), 6.4GB/s bandwidth

The 9200 pro runs at 300MHz core speed, and has 128-bit 300MHz DDR memory (600MHz effective), 9.6GB/s bandwidth

All 3 9200 models use the RV280 core, which only has 4 pixel pipelines. It's the same core in the Radeon 9000 (RV250), but with AGP8X support (big whoopee!). The older R200 core (Radeon 8500/8500LE/9100) is superior since it has 8 pipelines and 250MHz or 275MHz 128-bit memory (8GB/s or 8.8GB/s bandwidth).

-------------------------

So yes, the 9200 SE performs the same as a 9000, if the 9000 was crippled by a 64-bit memory interface. ;) It's the 9200 non-pro that's the same as the 9000. The 9200 SE lags far behind in performance. There are still Radeon 9100 deals available that are much better and cheaper than 9200 SE cards. The 9100 = 250MHz core, 128-bit 250MHz memory (500MHz effective, 8GB/s bandwidth).

And BTW, the 5200 w/128-bit memory interface is faster and cheaper than the 9200 SE. :D

buy.com also loves to pull this trick. $70 + $8 shipping on sale day and then $72 with free ship the next...

The TI4200 is still a faster, usually a lot faster. It's not a worthwhile upgrade to buy either today, at least not a cost-effective upgrade from a GF3TI200... it'd take a Radeon >= 9500 to be worth it.

Yeah, I went back and was looking at the actual benchmarks using 42.72 ver drivers: Anand's article back in March:

The GeForce FX 5200 Ultra performs slightly above the level of a GeForce4 MX 460 in situations where no AA or aniso is enabled; but once again, enabling those features causes the 5200 Ultra to perform more like a GeForce4 Ti 4200 than a GeForce4 MX. The reason behind this is obviously not because of any compression algorithms (as there is no color/Z compression in the NV34 GPU), but rather because of the AA and anisotropic filtering engines, as well as a vastly improved memory controller when compared to the GeForce4 MX (not to mention the higher clock speeds).

Looks like where Direct 3D is concerned, the Ti4200 does better, and on openGL games they are about even, now with the 52.16 drivers, it looks like they really didn't mess much with oGL, and improved the D3D apps some, but I'll agree with you, it's still not enough to catch up to the Ti4200, and this is with an Ultra.

These cards run very cheap though, and while the performance is not great, you will be able to play any game out there (yes, you will have to adjust some settings), but for a $65 video card, I think that's a good trade off. There really isn't another card out there that can compete with that price (the 9000 and 9200 are about the same price, but this card outperforms those two and has Dx9).

:) yes, before you say it, the Dx9 on this card is pretty useless, I know. :)

Spending the additional $40-50 to get a 9600 would be a great choice also. I don't see anymore 9500's for sale except on pricewatch, and they are about that same price.

So, to sum it all up: I agree with mindless1, there really isn't too much of an upgrade from a GF3Ti200, you would be better off saving up some cash and getting something that is going to knock your visual socks off. The 9600 or the 5700 is going to do that.
