How can people afford to smoke? Pack a day for low end cigs = $6
$6 x 7 = $42/wk or $168/month to smoke.

Cigarette Tax Increasing
Last Update: 4/03 7:14 am

Albany, NY - The New York Legislature has agreed to boost the state cigarette tax by $1.25 per pack, making the new tax $2.75. That puts New York ahead of New Jersey for the nation's highest state sales tax on cigarettes.

State budget office spokesman Jeffrey Godron says the tax would raise $265 million for the budget, most of which will be used for health programs.

The average price of a pack of cigarettes is about $5.82 statewide.

The original proposal was for a $1.50 increase

There are far cheaper and quicker ways to kill yourself, you know?

I guess it's true what they say: A fool and his money will surely be parted.

what bothers me is what are the going to tax when they make smokeing against the law or more people quit?

The air of course.
And your property.

more tax on gas and alcohol.... wait... they'll do that anyway.

I  New York... they ban smoking in public places so I don't feel asphyxiated when I go out into some restaurant or club or whatever... it's a beautiful thing 🙂.

it actually spoils you so that when you go to a different state, NC, for example, that it's a killer going into a smoke filled bar.

They're talking about adding a buck here in FL! ...

Glad I haven't been a "smoker" in almost 6 years ...

That smell is the dissipation of a business owner's ability to make his own decisions 😉

yea its annoying in states where they dont have the law and you are used to it

it however is great in Boston where you see 30 people outside of a club wearing almost no clothing in sub zero weather choking down a cig

I used to live in PA and went to college in PA, so I was quite used to the opposite. But I could see how it'd be a pain. When I went down to visit a friend in PA, we got stuck in the smoking section of the Chinese place 🙁.

When you're a cheap ass college kid... having to do something like prematurely wash your coat or whatever because it smells like smoke is a tad bit annoying =\.

Are you sure that is the highest in the nation? I thought Chicago was higher at $3.25 total I don't smoke, so I'm not sure.

anybody want me to ship them some cigs? I think they are cheap here. ~25-30 carton for marlboros.. 😛

California is eons ahead of you my friend. Here you can't even smoke on public piers out in the bay in San Francisco.

Wasn't it NY that requested the sales logs of some online cigarette dealers and tried collect a couple million in taxes due?

Not very good timing with this tax, IMO with our economy sucking right now. I do not smoke but that's just my opinion.
