anonymous domain name registration?

some sites offer anonymous registration, to my understanding this will hide my name if i register.

but my question is, is it truly hidden? can some big company pay or force godaddy to show my name? (legality of site content will be in the gray area, that's why i ask)
 
I know from watching a friend go through this with GoDaddy, they will not give it up without a court order (he was trying to find out who registered a site to smear him). Other companies I would assume to be similar but can't say for sure.
 
Also, depending on your content and hosting company your site may get shut down by the host if someone sends them a cease and desist letter.
