Recent news on the story has verified that commonly frequented credit report website, AnnualCreditReport.com, was infiltrated by hackers without the company even realizing it.

Late Tuesday, credit bureau, Equifax, confirmed that some of the credit reports highlighted on the “The Secret Files” hacker page were retrieved from AnnualCreditReport.com:

“Equifax can confirm that fraudulent and unauthorized access to four consumer credit reports has occurred through the AnnualCreditReport.com channel, a free public service that allows all consumers to get annual access to their credit report,” according to a statement released by Equifax.

How pathetic.
And remember, the site was "protected" by norton secure.

Now, we have to wonder, just how many other people's data was given by them...

Idiots.

*edit, forgot a "?" in the title.

Celebrity hackers stole data from AnnualCreditReport.com, Equifax says

Still unknown "hacker" released the private information of more than a dozen celebrities, leaking their phone numbers, mortgages, and Social Security numbers online.

At time of writing it included. Jay-Z, Beyonce, Attorney General Eric Holder and Hillary Clinton First Lady Michelle Obama; former Vice President Al Gore; former vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin; former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton; Los Angeles Police Chief Charlie Beck; former California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger; actor and director Mel Gibson; actor Ashton Kutcher; businessman Donald Trump; former wrestler Hulk Hogan; pop singers Kanye West, Beyoncé, and Britney Spears; and socialites Kris Jenner and Paris Hilton.

I would not be surprised if I saw an Asian dude with an ID/SSN/Passport that says Bill Clinton in the near future...

OP is being rather misleading. ACR verifies identity and then forwards the user to each of the credit bureaus to access the actual report. If I know your SSN and DoB and can answer some simple biographical questions, then I can "compromise" the service. Yazoo's links explain this in more detail.

Disclaimer: I don't work for the CC industry and admittedly, ACR should have checks in place if repeated requests are originating from the same host. But AFAICT, this isn't the Russians or Chinese grabbing millions of consumer credit records in a single "hack". If someone already has your SSN and DoB, they can do damage without pulling a free credit report.

Are we only at risk if we've used this service?

If the 3rd post accurately reflects events then there wasn't any actual hacking but trolling through public records for data (SS#, past and current addresses, banks, etc) and it was entered in ACR just like you would if you wanted to pull your own data.

Basically it's all media FUD.

It's a good business model

Give annual credit reports free
Give away identities free
Charge for secured annual credit report
profit!

um... they broke into the servers and took all the info. no SS# needed for that. in fact, the SS#'s probably came with the breach.

and this was the site that was recommended, yes. the gimmicky one, freecredireport.com was the one everyone was told to stay away from.

Nope, all they did was answer the questions needed to get the credit report. The leaked reports are celebrities, because their personal information is easily accessed. No system was compromised, they just abused poor identity verification systems, and knew the SS and other info needed for the celebrities' reports.

Is this the shitty worthless credit report site with the singing honkeys that I wish would die in a fire? Or a different shitty worthless site?

Either way, the solution is obviously to shut them all down and euthanize their owners.

This is the website recommended by the US government, and mandated by law to give out credit reports from the 3 bureaus for free. It does not give out your actual credit score.

BTW, for anyone looking for free credit score I recommend CreditKarma and Credit Sesame. Check it as much as you want and it's completely free.

Both these give FAKOs and not FICOs. They use their own scoring and weighting system.

highland145, what is "S. C."?

I haven't used AnnualCreditReport.com in years. So was our information compromised or was media spreading FUD?
