Annoying Windows update message

My computer is windows updated regularly, actually every time I get the windows update message which is usually just before I shut down my system. Can anyone tell me why for about the last 5 or 6 times I boot up my system I get the following message?
"Configuring Windows Updates
0% complete
Do not turn off your computer."
This has become annoying especially since there have been no updates over the last 5 or 6 sessions. What can I do get rid of this annoyance if it is at all possible?

You'll need to give us more info, are you letting it update or shutting down via the power button? If your not letting it run through the update process, it will try and update with each shutdown. You can go into windows update via the control panel too see if there are updates pending, If there are, I would suggest you allow them to install from there. You can always turn off auto update but then be sure to check often for important updates and install those manually.

My Computer > right-click your boot hard drive > Tools > Error-checking > Check now > Check both boxes and click OK.

You should get a message informing you that the requested error check will occur next time to reboot your computer.

You don't say which version of Windows you have, but if it's Vista or 7, just run the Windows Update from your state menu or control panel. That SHOULD get rid of the annoying message.

If Windows Update gets messed up, a good general fix is stop the Windows Update service, delete all the contents of the DataStore & Download folders in the SoftwareDistribution folder, then restart the service. Has fixed many problems on many computers for me.

Thanks folk, tried BoomerD first and that worked fine. Will bear the other solutions in mind for the future. Thanks once again.
