Okay I am in college right now. Those bastards took almost 4 days to give me the info I needed to turn my internet on(not including the weekend). Basically Im plugged into the network through my dorm wall. They gave me a paper with all the info I need to manually connect to the network. The service is verry expensive too and I am pretty pissed right now.

Anyways to the problem. I lose my connection every few minutes. I get an error message that tells me that there is a conflict with another ip adress on the network. All I have to do is "repair" my connection and it works fine in 5 seconds. Makes it impossible to play games and sutch. Now I will call them to complain about this but I was wondering what yu guys think. I will have to do this tomorrow since I have classes untill 8:30 today.

Because it worked fine last night for 3-4 hours my guess is that somebody on the network is either knowingly or unknowingly leeching of my connection and thats what causes the problem. I dont have much bandwith per month so thats would be a problem. The only thing I dont get is would this problem also affect the other guy?

Anyways thanks for any insights on this. Please excuse my english my first language is french.

Did you use Auto setting for ip?
Auto ip assigned by DCHP server would prevent incorrect static ip settings

Otherwise simply try another ip address
I don't know how good you are with networking
IP conflict can be solved simply by changing to another free ip. But since you don't knbow what ips are free you better use auto ip setting and obtain the ip from DCHP server. Otherwise you are conflicting the ip for other user as well

They dont allow that basically the give you a piece of paper with the settings they want you to use and tell you how tu put them in yourself.
