annoying problem with monitor

Recently, my monitor started blinking at random times. It will briefly go black and make a "clicking" noise like it does when I change the resolution, only the resolution doesn't change when it does this. Sometimes I will also get artifacts or other random graphic errors right before it does this. For example, one time I was working on a document in word and instead of displaying the whole document, it displayed about the top 1/3rd of it over and over. I couldn't get it back to normal until the monitor "blacked out" on its own. A couple times it caused my whole computer to lock up.

I'm not an expert, but I can hazard a guess that maybe you changed something on your computer, maybe a new graphics card or some overclocking? It doesn't sound like the monitor if your system locked up.

Are you sure your graphics card isn't getting overheated or malfunctioning? I have a 7yo gateway 17" screen that displayed visual artifacts and other random weirdness on this PC's older graphics board, but now it has been a GF4 Ti4200 from BFG and a nice 19" screen, and it looks great. When I put the screen on a different PC, it didn't exhibit any of these problems on a better video card. It does, however, click and blink when changing resolutions like it always has done for a while.

This sounds more like you're having troubles with your graphics card instead. Personally, I find it hard to believe that a monitor would cause your PC to lock up. I would be thinking more along the lines of a problem with the video caused it to lock up. Have you double-checked the connection and made sure no pins are bent slightly? The first thing that I would do is hook that monitor up to a different PC/laptop and see what happens.

Edit: Nice timing on the two posts here! 😉

I suppose it's worth mentioning that occasionally the fan on my vid card seems to get "off balanced". It will start to make an annoying buzzing noise that usually lasts for a couple days then goes away.

I'm not saying that it is normal, but my has been doing that for 2-3 years, intermittently. It is annoying, but since the monitor still works and I have upgraded thru 2 sets of PSU, 2 different MB, 2 different video cards and HD and even OS, I believe the issue is with the monitor and not any other hardware. Since I am using the monitor till it dies, it doesn't bother me that much that I feel the need to rush out an spend $$ on a new monitor..

The problem is most likely your video card. Check the obvious stuff first (e.g. card seated firmly in slot, not running hot, no stray cables laying on the card, etc...). If possible, connect the monitor to a different system. If it works fine, the card is the problem. If it still does it, the monitor is the culprit. Or, connect a monitor that has never displayed this problem to the card and see if it happens. If so, then the card is at fault.

The other possibility is the VGA cable. There could be a bad connection between the pins and the video card, the cable have been bent to the point of having a wire break its covering and create an intermittent short, or there could be a short where the cable connects to the monitor.

I've never encountered a situation where a monitor would cause a computer to lock up. No matter the monitor, you can always install a generic driver, so driver issues should not be a problem.

Most likely, the video card is starting to wear out.

Also...the buzzing fan. If the card has come unseated, a little play in the card could be the reason the fan rattles. More likely, though, is that your fan is wearing out and causing the card to overheat. You could always replace the fan and see if the problem clears up.

I had a problem with one of my monitors, I wasn't sure what was the problem. I switch computers, same problem my monitor was blinking. I did very thing format the PC etc.. then I RMA my monitor thanks to my 3yrs warranty, thank god I had my receipt 🙂, fixed the monitor and everything is ok now.

i had the same problem with the monior. i installed the 9600xt into it, changed the refresh rate and played Halo. while in Halo, i play with the setting and the monitor crash. Took the 9600xt out and put the TNT2 back in. then those problems start to come on, fuzzing, blinking and clicking at random. 2 months later the monitor died. my monitor was like 4 years old
