Annoying "hickup sound"...

I was playing Vice city yesterday and a little bit of today and I would every once in a while hear this hickup sound come from the computer speakers. I have no idea what it is but it does this every once and a while and it drives me nuts. I log off the computer because I'm done playing and I log back in to go on the web (separate accounts) and I hear that same hickup sound played agian after I logged in.

This also reminds me of the time my old sister's computer would make this crazy noise through the computer's speakers every once in a while (win95, then her XP machine) and I could not explain it. You scan the computer... nothing, you check the bootup but nothing. Has anyone heard of this phenominon where the computer will play a random sound through the computer's speakers every once in a while?

I've been meaning to ask this too...cept it happens to me with my headphones, speakers, stereo, etc. and I have no idea why.

I have a program that burps every few seconds, it's a gag thing. Doesn't show up as a virus, perhaps it's one of those? Try clean booting (msconfig, get rid of all startup items) and see if you still hear it.

I've already gone through MS config but nothing...

It's from your Cell Phone.

What are you talking about?

Is there a cellphone near the system? My cellphone will produce a loud clicking/buzzing sound when it's brought near any powered up electronics that has a speaker. Things like a home stereo system, a portable CD/MP3 player, a car stereo system, a PC sound system, and even something simplistic like a white noise generator - it transmits interference into those things, which is manifested as a sometimes very loud clicking/buzzing.

I had this same problem. It actually turned out to be the speakers. I was using a set of 2.1's that I had gotten as a gift 5 years ago, so I decided that I needed a new set anyway. The new ones haven't done it since.

On a note that may or may not be related, for what ever reason I was checking the ground for my phone lines and it was disconnected, I reconnected it.. I don't know if this is the phone companies way of drumming up business, but I got a random call later that day stating that I had scheduled "line service" and the tech would be there shortly. I cancelled of course. Anyways, there were some wierd quirks with my phone system, but they have seemed to gone away once I found that ground wire.
