Why not just make it a universal standard for cell phones to automatically turn to vibrate mode (or otherwise turn off the sound ringer) when a certain signal is broadcast (i.e. in movie theaters)?

Walk into a movie theater, restaurant, etc., and your cell phone automatically turns to vibrate mode. You can still receive your message, and the rest of us don't have our movies/meals interupted with some annoying ring-tone that you think is cute.

btw, remember those obnoxious car horns that would play all sorts of different songs instead of just beeping? Especially popularized for the rednecks by Dukes of Hazard... How is it that those horns never became popular (thankfully), yet I constantly hear those same tunes being played by cell phones??

that's a good ideal, the ringtone is annoying...but the loudmouthed conversation that follows is the real problem

Because it isn't a discussion of faraday cages in movie theaters, which is the *topic* of the other thread?

Had the *topic* of your thread been "discuss ideas to limit annoying cell phones in movie theaters", then, yes it would have belonged in your thread. :) :p

Yes, my topic was definitely a spin-off from your thread... But, it's like asking "Why wasn't "Joni Loves Chachi" just done as episodes of "Happy Days."

I agree that the conversation is the worst part...
But, I can accept the annoying ringing as an oversight...
The conversation is clearly indicative of poor manners/ rudeness.
edit: and therefore worthy of wet skittles :p :)

In a perfect world cellphones would not ring at all, only vibrate.

I think I posted this idea in the other thread (not sure if anyone else did).

I can say with confidence that the theatre industry would jump at the chance to install this technology, if it was available.

And then some dumbass would sue the theatre because they missed some sort of call because it turned his phone onto vibrate mode....

Theatres, as do most businesses that have much to do with the public, get stupud lawsuits all the time.

All they have to do is make the patrons aware of the policy. The vast majority of them would welcome the change.

INSERT LOUD AND ANNOYING RINGTONE HERE
"Hello! ... HELLO!"
pause
"MIKE! How are you, buddy? Where're you at?"
pause. now I've lost focus, so instead of the movie, i'm looking at this SOB
"I'm near Lenox, at the AMC"
pause
"Yah, I"m in a movie right now"
pause
"YEa, it's called Blue Sea or something..."
turns to guy next to him, who is really pissed off, and asks
"whats the name of this movie?"
pissed off guy whispers: "deep blue sea"
"thanks.. yea, it;s called deep blue sea"
pause
"idunno man, it's something about a bunch of sharks and a hot chick in a bikini"
pause. i'm seated a row behind this guy. girl sitting next to me is really pissed. starts mumbling and turns to me and starts cribbing about him. i don't know the girl. i don't care. i'm trying to watch a fvcking movie here, and now thanks to SOB-with-cellphone and girl-with-IRRITATING-high-pitched-voice, i'm not gonna see any more of this movie.
"yeah man, she's a hottie. she took off her wet-suit and she's in a bikini to attract the shark... no, seriously man"

at this point, i'm debating telling this guy off... but he's well built and looks like he's a football player. but that's whne girl next to me sharts shouting
"hey a$$hole, we're watching a movie here. shut the fvck up! shut. the. fvck. up."
she repeats that a few more times until the guy actually hangs up. now everyone's looking at the girl, then at me.

yes, i hate cellphones at movie theaters.
