I have a book entitled"Windows XP Hacks", by Preston Gralla
and in it one of his "hacks" suggests using an annonymous proxy to surf the net. He lists a couple of sites(www.stayinvisible.com is one) to use. my question is who sets these sites up and why? What do they get out of it.

proxy servers

Whoops just read what sites you are talking about (I wouldnt use those)

I would imagine they get a good feeling by helping out the rest of the internet, however if you use them to do bad stuff, I would assume they will not be very anonymous in the face of a warrant. :)

Use proxy servers in Brazil. haha

they are setup by those that realize that it can be very useful to surf annonomously. what if you have a a slightly computer educated wife/husband and you wanted to go online and buy them a surprise. if you use something like that proxy site, they'll never know where you went until the package arrives

People set them up specifically to offer identity masking to those who want/need it. It's the same reason people spend all their time making opensource software, or modding their phones, or programming versions of Mario Bros. for their cameras: because they can.

I've not ever used a proxy server before. Is it generally recommended to pick a reliable one closest to your physical location?

Where would one go to find a list of reliable proxy servers?

You have explained the value of using a proxy server, however my question was who sets them up for free, and what are they getting out of it. For instance if you go to Stayinvisible their is little or no advertising.
