I'm more into the robot side of anime rather than the ninja fighting stuff.

Evangelion was a little too deep for me. And Akira was pretty good.

I loved most of the Gundam stuff.

Has anyone ever heard of Saint Seiya? I remember watching it as a youngster. They had suits based on astrological signs... the core 5 were based on the Phoenix, Pegasus, Dragon, Andromeda and the Swan... Good ish, but not many people have heard of it.

My 3 favorite animes are:

Evangelion - You must see it if you are an anime fan. Humanity's war against the 2nd coming of God. Very deep.
Record Of Lodoss War - A great series for those who like fantasy stuff. Dragons, knights, elves, dwarves, etc.
Serial Experiments: Lain - A dark and involved series. Very slow paced but well worth the time.

Other I like:

Escaflowne
Guyver
Sailor Moon - Very funny series even though it's for girls.
DNA^2
Trigun
Card Captor Sakura
Tenchi Muyo
Cutey Honey
Dragon Half

And I could go on. Have fun.

Tops on my list.

Macross Plus. -> Awesome visuals, awesome music, excellent story. Even though the Dubbed version is different than the sub version they both make sense.

Ghost in the Shell ->Classic. Story is slow, but well executed. It is a very philsophical subject about what make us self-aware.

Akira -> Everybody should own this movie.

Grave of the Fireflies -> Most of you guys probably won't like this movie. But for those of us that care more about plot and story this is the movie for that.

Princess Mononoke -> Another movie with excellent story and animation.

These are my favorites and a must see for no anime watchers.

If anyone is interested in learning about the influences and ideals of the makers of many of the films mentioned, they should read Samurai from Outer Space: Understanding Japanese Animation by Antonia Levi. It's a very interesting reference about the history, symbolism, and hidden meanings of anime. Also, there's a very comprehensive book titled something like the "Anime Bible" or something like that that is also a very interesting read. Both explain ideas on the reasons for the large eyes, Shinto and Buddhist influences, etc, etc. Very cool reading for fans.

i don't get why people like vegeta. if you've watched all of z and gt, i don't know how you can like him more than goku.

basicly, vegeta screws up earth directly or indirectly and then goku has to save earth. it's a endless cycle. :p

dc,

I look beyond the story line. :)

I like Vegeta's "never give up" attitude.

FLCL if you like gainax and wacky stuff.

Angel Sanctuary (tenshi kinryoku) - Best angel type anime/manga I've ever experienced. The 3 part anime will hopefully be continued (was released last year, I think).. The manga is still going. quick review - http://animenext.com/reviews/Manga/AngelSanctuary.cfm

And It's soundtrack kicks much ass, IMO :)

Lord *space* Maul,

Don't make fun of Vegeta. He'll kill you. :p

Many Japanese anime character names have funny root words. i.e. Kakaroto (carrot), Vegeta (vegetable), Broli (brocolli), etc. :)

Vegita is all about pride in his own race, he is a prince after all :).

I can't get into these drama anime flicks. Princess Mononoke..

I also couldn't get into the lain series, I watched two and just couldn't see the point. Guess I'm just into hardcore action Anime. (and Hentai :D)

dabuddha, i buy anime from alot of different places online. www.bestprices.com has good prices and seem to keep up pretty good with new releases and such ive been buyin from them alot lately. I use www.suncoast.com only for titles that i must have (suncoast is known for shippin titles up to 2 weeks before their street day), they cost a lil more but for some titles that you need to get they are the places to go. buy.com is/was good, they are kinda in the air now i havent shopped with them in sometime. www.express.com is good for only titles in stock, youll wait for ever on backordered items. www.amazon.com is pretty good overall, not the best prices but good selection and competitive enough.

Anime: Animation that has its primary source in Japanese culture, history,
and style of drawing, storytelling, and acting. In the West the term is
used to identify types of animation that are different that the "cartoony"
attitude that most Americans have grow up with.

Japanimation: Nowadays, this is considered a derogatory term. It can
have the same basic meaning as anime, but implies a bit of a racial
slur, and tries to carry the "cartoony" nature over to titles that
are trying to tell a more dramatic story. For many "old school" fans,
it also reminds them of the days when companies would hack good stories
to pieces because they thought all we wanted was the cool animation and
didn't care about the creative effort put into the shows.

No flame intended, buy saying of some title "Its so much more than just anime."
or bashing other stories because you don't "get it" is missing the whole
point of what Anime is. Anime is just a medium to format the stories in, and
you can tell any type of story in that framework... from high drama to crap, and
everything in between.

Atom: When I first met my roommate, he was such a UY fanatic that he didn't even
realize there were other types of anime.

another great site for anime is www.anipike.com
