What is the coolest anime you've ever seen? Why?

I'm trying to find out more cool ones to watch.

Similar to Tuffguy's list:

Akira
Fist of the North Star
Ghost in the Shell
Dominion Tank Police

I haven't watched much anime in 7 or 8 years, but I still watch Akira & Ghost in the Shell from time to time. Definitely classics.

too bad u dont talk about comics (japanese). if you can get some of "BASTARD!" please do, it's not for kids i suppose but it has to be one of the best drawn and interesting comics i've seen (along side Slam Dunk).

Best anime? hmm prolly Ghost in the Shell. If you see it u'll know why. it gets to the main point of story without crap that other anime puts in. and it is well animated too.

akira
ghost in the shell
mononoke hime

captain harlock
starblazers,
cowboy bebop,
vision of escaflowne,
and tenchi muyo.

the first three because they were great stories visually
and had some philosophical moralizing about identity, society, etc., and are definitely classics.
the harlock and starblazers were my favorites growing up. they came on at 6:30 and 7:00 in the morning on weekdays. Robotech should be there as I loved that too, just not as much now.
Cowboy bebop is just too cool...

Everyone says Ghost in the Shell, but that movie had about the most boring plot I've ever watched.

For movies, good ones are
Akira (coming back to theaters and then DVD soon)
Ninja Scroll
Princess Mononoke
Kite

For series'
Cowboy Bebop (best series I've ever seen)
Trigun
Dual (it's pretty interesting so far, but it's also far from being complete in English)

Cowboy Bebop, Kenshin, Initial D, Kimagure Orange Road, Maison Ikkoku for series.

Princess Mononoke, I Can Hear The Sea, and Wings of the Honnemeise (or whatever) for movies.

The only 2 I've ever seen have been pretty good... Tenchi Muyo and, of course, Sailor Moon. I used to watch that show every afternoon with my sisters on the Cartoon Network before I went off to college. :)

If you liked Tenchi, then you'd probably like Dual! it's by the makers of Tenchi and is pretty cool. Ranma½ is good if you like funny cheezy stuff.

All Time Favorite:
Neon Genesis Evangelion - end of the world type of stuff - Humanoid Mechas, quasi-religions/phylosophical

Recommended (also):
Love Hina - guy who has failed college entrance exams time after time. his life as the manager of a female dormitory - romantic comedy

Tenshi Ni Narumon - girl who wants to become an angel. *WEIRD* but funny :) - comedy

Oh My Goddess - guy and his encounter with a goddess - romance, little comedy too (anime CLASSIC. watch it)

DNA² - girls from future comes back to stop a megaplayboy - comedy

[edit: inserted following]

Serial Experiments Lain - computers and an alternate world (i guess) - really different from most anime. i like it for this fact alone.

Princess Mononoke was a drama, not an action movie. It's like the Shawshank Redemption of anime. It's not exciting, but it's still amazing.
