Anime similar to Appleseed / Ghost in the Shell?

Just saw the 2004 version of appleseed and really liked it. the pace is a lot quicker than GITS, more action packed. Anything else thast similar that has been released recently?

Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex is brilliant.
Cowboy Bebop is still the king of anime after all these years, both the TV series and the movie.
Anything by Satoshi Kon is worth checking out. Serious, serious mindf**ks though. He really messes with your head.

There are also some great comedy animes. Fullmetal Panic? Fumoffu (that's the name) is utterly hilarious. Netflix it. It's so worth it.

Battle Angel
Armitage III Movies
Anything by Satoshi Kon (what Traxan said)

well..not much. appleseed was the first cell shaded animation that was any good.
