I just watched the first two episodes of this. I'd prefer no spoilers if all is revealed later.

Below you will find confused mumblings and in some form a cry for help. This post still makes more sense than the show.

I went online and read glowing reviews, all of which claim that it is some sort of masterpiece that can only be understood after 3 viewings or more. Apparently some people find it hilarious too in some as yet unknown way.

Anyone else see this? I like the style and animation, but after watching it and thinking about it for about a day I still have no idea whether I kind of like it or hate it. I also have no real clue what the heck is going on. For those of you who haven't seen it, this is the basic plot of the first episode:

A young kid is hanging out with this brother's girlfriend, who may or may not be trying to molest him. A weird chick on a vespa runs him over, performs CPR, then hits him with an electric guitar. This causes a weird penis-like horn to grow on his head. Which later spouts a robot and a robot arm (which the vespa chick beats up). She also runs his (dad? grandfather?) over and thus becomes their housekeeper.

I remember having the same basic reaction after listening to OK Computer, which later I did enjoy quite a lot. I also remember having the same reaction to mulholland drive, which I later thought was complete masturbatory drivel.

So far I only get about 1/1000 of the references. Maybe this anime is only for people who have watched tons of other anime and understand references (e.g. I noticed the haibane renmei references).

Summary: Watched 2 episodes of FLCL. What the?

FLCL is very surreal.

Its from Gainax so that is to be expected.

I loved the series.

I was a little confused at the beginning also. Finish the series, it was definitely worth it; it's only 4 more episodes anyway.

6 episodes, 30 minutes each.

If you do watch it, do not expect to understand it.

3 discs, 6 episodes, 180 minutes total.

I've seen the first 4 episodes, and it's weird in a good way. I wouldn't say it's conventionally good like RahXephon or Noir, but worth seeing to supply your minimum yearly requirement of oddness.

It's like a story being told the second time around.

Many of the things effectively get explained later. Around the 4th episode you start either getting it, or not caring about it and enjoy the series. If you want to be able to get all the details straight, this is NOT a series for you. It is however, quite entertaining and keeps ramping up the entertainment value until the end.

You thought Noir was weird? I mean it was interesting, but I wouldn't say it was weird. Some of my weird animes are:

Neon Genesis Evangelion
RahXephon
FLCL
Serial Experiments: Lain
Gankutsou (sorta)
Gantz
Texhnolyze

EDIT: And FLCL really milked it on the DVDs, I mean 2 eps a pop? Please...

FLCL is very unconventional, and confusing, but at the end, i ended up saying, awesome! even if i didn't understand 90% of the anime the first time through. and is a signature gainex anime. it takes a basic coming of age story into a crazy mix, which literally makes no sense, but in some levels it does i suppose. i still don't get much of it even after seeing it twice.

i usually hate dubs on anime, but this one actually has a pretty good one, and i think you actually have to watch it a few times dubbed to actually figureout what the series is about. even tho i hate the fact that they split 6 eps into 3 discs (the way anime is sold in japan..) i'm still dropped my money on all three discs..

I loved FLCL. It was really weird, but in a funny and compelling way, and the animation was great. I saw it in subbed bootlegs, AFAIK, so I don't know how good or bad the English dub is.

Oh, and the soundtrack rocks.

Ahh yeah! Flcl Is quite the awesome anime. At first run, it may be a case of wtf? but watch it a time or two, and you shall see, Freaking hilarious. Espically the 5th episode, with the southpark and lumpinIII refrences. I liked it, and the pillows(soundtrack) was ppretty good. all around really good anime. Watch!

Noir is one of the most straight forward anime that I have ever watched. It featured hot and/or cute chicks killing alot of people because of a secret society. The only strange part about that was the fact that after leaving 50 dead people with masks on the roofs of a small town that the place wasn't evacuated and the town wasn't searched for clues.

I enjoy that how for some reason, and I really do not like anime too much. I would not compare it really, it's just plain odd.

Have you seen the complete texhnolyze? I'm up to the 3rd disc and am enjoying it, but I was kind of hoping it would be less cryptic than it is. Lain was pretty cryptic, but less so than tex, and haibane renmei (same team basically) was nowhere near as cryptic. Still, i'm enjoying it.

In Texhnolyze it starts to make more sense at the end, but I found the ending as weird, if not weirder than Lain, and that's saying a bit.
