I hate to admit it, but I quit after the first episode. It seemed like it was falling into the trap of being weird for weird's sake... as odd as that sounds.

I get what you are saying, but I will say that it all makes sense in the end and is actually quite clever. That being said, you have to kinda tough out the first several eps but it's worth it if you do.

Robotics;Notes is actually starting to do some of the same stuff. I watched it because... well, I like robots, and now they're deviating further away from the robotics club background into all this weird mumbo-jumbo about sending signals into space and some guy being murdered for some reason.

I've been pretty good at not spoiling myself on Robotics;Notes but yes, the plot involves bigger things than the robotics club activities.

EDIT:
Regarding non-sucking robot shows, have you seen Gundam Unicorn? It's quite good.

You know what show I wouldn't mind seeing more of? "Working!!" Even though the show started dragging on a bit in the oddly titled sequel "Working'!!", I still enjoyed watching it for the silly banter between the characters.

Okay, okay... I'll give it a few more episodes!

Do they at least get to build the big robot? :( All the robot stuff in the opening is really such a tease.

Yes, but I think I might be an episode or two behind. Since it's an OVA, I usually forget that it's coming out... just like I do with Hellsing Ultimate. :p

Although, my favorite is still Gundam Wing, and while I know most don't care for AC series Gundam shows because of their overpowered mobile suits, I really like the music in Gundam Wing and the OVA (Endless Waltz). It's probably the best music in any Gundam series that I've seen.

Even with my dislike for Gundam AGE (I got about 40-some episodes in before I had to stop), it can't beat the Gundam 00 movie as the worst Gundam feature that I've seen.

I watch Naruto Shippuden and Fairy tail.

When it comes to the long shounen series, I just read the manga, and when I encounter a cool scene, I watch it in the anime when it finally comes out. I used to watch more long shounen series like that, but I grew tired of the inevitable filler episodes/arcs that exist. If I remember correctly, Fairy Tail was decent with it and they only sprinkled a few episodes here and there, but One Piece is pretty bad. :\

Although, One Piece being so bad with fillers is really Oda's fault. I enjoy One Piece, but the chapters have so little content in them that it's rather ridiculous. I recall this one chapter when they were heading down to Fishman Island where Oda spent the whole time giving the reader a goddamn marine biology lesson. The One Piece anime chews through the chapters so fast that fillers are necessary. Heck, I just opened the latest One Piece episode (571), and it's at the end of Fishman Island arc, which is right before the arc where the manga is. :|

I'm a casual yet 'elitist' anime fan with little tolerance for juvenile stuff (like Naruto, Bleach). I mostly only like high-production stuff with good story.

I haven't come across anything worthy since Cowboy Bebop and Evangelion. About 4-5 years ago, people recommended Elfen Lied or Ergo PRoxy. I was terribly turned off. Elfen Lied IS the quintessential kiddie crap with stupid-shallow plot. Just because it has unwarranted gore, doesn't mean it's 'mature.' I deleted that crap after first episode.

Ergo Proxy was too pretentious, and came across as 'complex-for-the-sake-of-it', rather than a genuine deep plot with interesting backplot.

I haven't bothered with any since.

It looks like Kids on the Slope checks out! I'm going to be watching it soon. Thanks for this. Anything else you think I might like? (high production/solid plot/non kiddish/no shonen cliche)

[edit]
Same applies for feature films. I'm a big fan of Ghibli Studio and few gems like Ghost in the Shell. But nothing good has come out in last 5-7 years it seems.
