I hate to admit it, but I quit after the first episode. It seemed like it was falling into the trap of being weird for weird's sake... as odd as that sounds.
I get what you are saying, but I will say that it all makes sense in the end and is actually quite clever. That being said, you have to kinda tough out the first several eps but it's worth it if you do.

I've been pretty good at not spoiling myself on Robotics;Notes but yes, the plot involves bigger things than the robotics club activities.

Regarding non-sucking robot shows, have you seen Gundam Unicorn? It's quite good.
