I think that after Weir gave his explanation that the animal rights people should have taken a step back and said -- Ya know what this guy has a point!!

Yet these are the same people who would put their animals comfort over the comfort of their own children...how sad!!

CHICAGO (AP)—Friends of Animals posted an open letter to U.S. figure skater Johnny Weir criticizing him for having fox fur on one of his costumes and asking him to stop wearing fur.

The animal advocacy group also contacted his costume designer, Stephanie Handler, on Tuesday.

“I totally get the dirtiness of the fur industry and how terrible it is to animals. But it’s not something that’s the No. 1 priority in my life,” Weir said on Tuesday. “There are humans dying everyday. There are thousands if not millions of homeless people in New York City. Look at what just happened in Haiti.

“I tend to focus my energy, if there is a cause, on humans. While that may be callous and bad of me, it’s my choice.”

Weir loves fashion, and his costumes tend to be on the avant-garde—some would say extreme—side. When the three-time U.S. champion redesigned his free skate costume before the U.S. champions, he had Handler add a tuft of white fox fur to the left shoulder.

Weir said he thought the costume was “lovely,” but Friends of Animals disagreed. Foxes are electrocuted or beaten, and their pelts are obtained by skinning the animals alive, said Anai Rhoads, spokeswoman for the group.

“He’s a role model for a lot of people, including other skaters,” said Priscilla Feral, president of Friends of Animals. “When he makes fun of the suffering of animals that are consumed for this frivolous fashion industry and whose lives are sacrificed so he can wear little tufts of fur on his outfit, that’s fair game for comment.”

Weir finished third at the U.S. champs, qualifying for his second Olympic team.

Friends of Animals was not the first group to target Weir. He said he’s gotten letters from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, and people have sent him videos depicting how animals are treated by the fur industry.

But Weir said this was the first time someone has contacted Handler.

“She did what I asked her to. It wasn’t her choice to make me a costume with fur,” Weir said. “At least directly come to me and yell at me. Don’t attack my peeps.”

Weir said he understands the groups’ objections, but he doesn’t share their point of view.

Besides, he’s not the only skater wearing animal skin products.

“Every skater is wearing skates made out of cow,” Weir said. “Maybe I’m wearing a cute little fox while everyone else is wearing cow, but we’re all still wearing animals.”

lol. I personally would never wear fox, but hes got a point. Why should foxes be held higher than cows?

Ever have a steak or hamburger? Cows are not killed just for their hides.

Should that make any difference to an animal rights group? Those cows killed could be killed just as inhumanely (or humanely) as foxes are killed, and their leather is used to create shoes. I can understand why they wouldn't make a fuss against leather shoes simply because it is a lost cause, but I am wondering how much the "cuteness" of a fox has to do with them being upset.

He has somewhat of a point regarding leather, but there are laws protecting cows from cruelty, and I believe the butchering industry does make an effort to minimize suffering.

I have a question for all the people defending fur. Why is it OK to electrocute and beat a fox, but not OK for Michael Vick to train dogs to fight?

Nothing I hate more than the gushy "oh I love the cute widdle puppies awww" idiots with a double standard.

I'm generally sympathetic to the cause, however I hate PETA and the type of do-gooders making it up. They agenda disgust me more than wearing kitten fur.

And yes, all animals should be regarded the same, despite their varying 'cuteness'.

I used to not care about this issue until I saw footage of an animal being skinned and realized that they don't kill them before skinning. In fact they don't kill them after, they just let them sit there skinned. It's really disgusting. I mean REALLY disgusting. I guess it makes sense as you don't want blood on the fur or holes in it but jeezus christ could you even imagine that level of pain?

Isn't that what the Predator did to that guy in the jungle, skinned him alive and left him to hang from a branch and slowly die?

Maybe I don't remember that part. Maybe the animals should cover themselves in clay and hide.

Anyways I used to say "hey, they should of evolved better" and I still think that. But maybe we should evolve a little bit and require a lethal injection before the skinning? I know this would increase the costs but fuck it this isn't cheap shit we are talking about anyhow.

Just look up the videos and watch them. I was going to post some of them here but I really don't want to look at them again.

Seeing a animal with half its skin on hanging on a hook and trying to turn and bite the guy skinning it is disgusting and wrong.

and after that it is laying on the ground WITH NO SKIN breathing (no eye lids so its eyes are streaming blood/tears)

It was very early on, one of the first to die i think. Definitely before Jesse "I have the sexual prowess of a f*cking Tyrannosaurus because I dip" Ventura.

Ever had coyote? Coyote aren't just killed for their hides. I'd eat fox too. My take? The animal activists can shove it.

And I wouldn't have a problem skinning you alive and feeding you to the foxes.

I'm sure someone Weir wouldn't have an issue using your hide as part of his costume when there are plenty of synthetic materials that would look/feel exactly like your hide and no spectator would even know the difference.

I dated an animal activist for a year JSt0rm01 she didn't eat meat either. I have no problem with them, I've seen all the videos, I still eat meat and I still use animal products because honestly it doesn't really bother me. It's fucked up that they don't kill them first, but it's how some places have been doing things for hundreds of years. An animal life isn't as valuable as a human life, unless that animal can save multiple human lives imo.

Capt Caveman, that's cool that you would have no problem skinning me and feeding me to the foxes, that says a lot about your character imo. Animals AREN'T human, they should not be treated as humans and should not be looked upon as equal to humans, they aren't. So Capt Caveman where's your PETA card? I see you have a pet dog in your AV is that yours? Do you know how PETA feels about pets?

I think we are generally in agreement here. All I'm saying is that industry could do a lot for their image by doing lethal injections on the animals. That might of been the old way and they NEEDED those furs to live. Thats ok then but today is different.

Thank god SOMEONE has some common sense. All this politically correct animal cruelty bs is driving me crazy. We're animals by nature. We're meant to be cruel. You think a lion is worried about how his prey is treated when he attacks and kills it? No. He just wants his meal.

Wait, I have to be a PETA member to find the farming of foxes for fur where they're skinned alive to be repulsive. Ok thanks, tells me a lot about your intelligence.

Let me guess, you're trying to be an animal. A parrot, right?
