Animal Control is on the way to take my dog and put her down...

I'm devastated and sad right now. About 2 hours ago I was lying on the floor of my living room playing Madden. My dog (6 year old pit bull/boxer mix) was sleeping next to me. All of the sudden she began having a seizure (she has never had one that I'm aware of).

She spasm'd all over, rolled eyes back, and began foaming at the mouth. After about 2 minutes she stopped and just laid there. After about 1 minute of that she snapped out of it and attacked me. She has never displayed this type of characteristic either.

I trapped her in the living room and she has been in the corner of the room barking into mid air for 2 hours straight. All the vets that have been contacted have informed me that if it is 2 hours past the seizure and she is still demonstrating this behavior..it will most likely never stop. I can't risk her hurting my other dog or my fiance.

This hurts so much.... I can't believe I just had to call someone to come take my dog and put her down. She is one of the best friends I have ever known.

Chloe, I love you and I'll always think of you...

Update the morning after (2/24/06)

Shots - yes, Chloe was up to date with all shots, including rabies and bordatello. However, if the dog had a low immune system, they could still be subject to getting rabies. I don't think this is the case here, but I'll know for sure whether it was rabies or not on Wednesday.

Animal control took Chloe away around 2 a.m. (4 hours after her seizures). The whole time until she was taken (even after) it was as if she didn't know who I was and was very aggressive towards me. This is very out there since she didn't even bark until she was 7 months old and has never growled or barked at me one time in 6 years.

The worst part of the evening was the animal control lady. I've never wanted to punch a lady before, but if I did, it would be this lady. The whole time she was completely condescending and not empathetic in any way what so ever. I'm pretty sure that she was a rejected cop that was getting herself off by harrassing people in their own homes. I'm going to be filing a complain on her later today.

I've been struggling the most with whether I made the right decision to put her down or not. I pretty much cried all night struggling with that. From all of the information I have found on the web though, the right decision was made. Chances are that when she started having these seizures, she entered Canine Rage Syndrome area where she was probably hallucinating and/or hearing things and would have been constantly aggressive.

It is so weird for her to be sleeping next to me like normal, chomping on a bone, or just eating dinner and a few hours later...gone. My other dog Ryder just keeps wandering around the house looking for her. It's almost more heartbreaking than last night.

FYI - for all of those that are blaming this on being a pit bull, you are foolish. Any dog could have a seizure or fall into CRS due to biological issues. Both of my dogs are 50% pit bull and I've never had an issue with either of them in any way what so ever. In fact, they are usually more affectionate than other breeds from what I understand.

Also, I can not approach her and there isn't a service that will take her to the vet to be looked at. The only people willing to come to the house are services to put her down. How can there not be a service that can tranquilize her and take her for evaluation????

If she attacked you she needs to be held for 10 days at least to see if you might need some treatment (Rabies?).

Holy crap, I've never heard of anything like that. Sorry to hear, always sucks to lose a pet. My dog is going to be 13 in May and I'm not sure he will see 14 (ya i know that's already old). He ACTS like a pup, which makes it hard, but lately he's been freaking out and hiding under furniture and chewing stuff up. He's on some liver medication and that seems to have taken care of it for the most part, but his age has finally become apparent. *sigh* :(

Just be glad that you were there to do something, rather than having it happen while your fiance (or even just the other dog) was home alone with her. :(

She just lunged at me. Didn't bite or scratch me, but she got into it with my other dog, so they're going to test her blood. She did attack my other dog so I'm going to keep an eye on that. They are both up to date on all their shots, but both were boarded for 8 days until 2 days ago. I'm wondering if something happened that I'm not aware of.

BTW, I called every vet in town that has an emergency number. No one will come.

Not according to vets....It's almost as if she is a completely different dog. Also, from what I've found on the net, the after effects usually only last 20-30 minutes. Anything after that is really bad.

Her eyes don't even look the same.....I'm convinced she is already gone.

Possible explanations so far include: brain tumour, skull injury, annurysm (sp?), strictnine or something like that in her system etc...

Unless something EXTREMLY f'd up happened at the boarding place and they didn't inform me, I'm assuming brain tumour or annurysm..sorry for the poor spelling on that one.

Hopefully they will do blood tests and let me know.

Aw man, that sucks. Hope you're ok physically though. I mean, hope she didn't take a chunk out of you or draw any blood.

that is sad, man. My dog had a siezure after we gave him prescribed doggy downers for a plane flight. We tell the vet about it, and THEN she says, "oh yeah, sometimes that happens!! WE would have never done that if we had all the information up front:(
He is OK, but it was scary.

Dude, that is terrible.

Sounds like what you are doing is the best thing. Can't trust the dog now, even if she was to snap out of it, you never know if it could happen again.

Aww, so sad. Sometimes animals do snap, thank goodness no one got hurt. No one wants to imagine the posts of devastation of an attack on you, or God forbid if you have small children..

I think you should kill the dog yourself...a very liberating experience. One shot...one kill. Then you could tan the hide and make a g-string for your fiance.

------------
And I think you should spend the next two weeks somewhere else. Perhaps you can use the time to find your heart and learn some respect.
