Thanks for posting that... it's actually a pretty smart valet mode then.

So... why the black key?

Because black is the color of rubber. If you want any left on the car you'll use the black key. Red is the color of blood. If you want to die, you use the red key.

lowers the hosepower to 500

When the red key is in use, the full potential of the 707 horsepower SRT Hellcat engine is in full effect. To dispel some misconceptions, the only performance restriction that results from use of the Black key is limiting the horsepower output to 500.
“The black key limits horsepower — that’s it,” said Jim Wilder, Dodge Challenger SRT Vehicle Development Manager. “There is still full functionality of everything else on the car.”

I was aware of what it did, just not why they bothered. If you're going to have a limited key, why not limit to something reasonable, like 300hp? 500 is still a lot of power.

i agree it's silly but maybe making it drop that far required more work or wasn't possible.

I've heard that tire upgrades can help out quite a bit on these cars. Some people are putting stickier 305/35s on them.

Bingo. If it were turbocharged, yes, you can control boost via software, but being supercharged there are limitations involved. Likely using the black key limits the fuel system in some way and there's only so much they can do.

The hellcat is a waste of money. you can just build an older camaro to be just as fast for way less.

You're missing the whole point. If you build a Camaro you won't have a really cool looking red key to use as a surrogate epeen.

So what you're telling me is that the only people that buy Hellcats have a tiny penis and don't actually care about the car's performance? well color me surprised!

It would also be an older camaro . . .and you'd have to "build" it and for many people, that sounds a not very fun.

that's true, but there are way better cars out there for 70k. you can get a 2010 GTR for that price and it would be a much more rounded car.

also you could probably pay a shop to build you a camaro for less than 70k

I'm still amazed that we've gotten to an era in automotive engineering where some dude driving a 700 HORSEPOWER MUSCLE CAR is telling his fellow owners not to race electric vehicles because they'll lose. Who could have seen this coming a decade ago?

Would that be black, or red?

A decade ago people lamented the death of Gas powered vehicles as the end of Power.

While the Tesla is certainly fast it tops out at about 130 whereas the Hellcat will get to close to 200, is cheaper and you don't have to worry about recharging places, drive it anywhere.

The GTR is a beast but IMO it's fugly as heck and good luck buying one that hasn't been beat to death or modded to death.

Yeah I never understood the "but compared to a Used car's price". If one where to wait 5-6 years on a used Hellcat, I am sure we could find them for ~40k. Half the price of a 5-6 year old GTR.

But the Hell kittens isn't about being a track monster/"lambo" killer. Its about a being a sleeper, being a car with crazy performance numbers that can also be a nearly every day daily driver. All without breaking the bank to buy one fresh which probably even more than a used GTR, would be a car that most would avoid buying used because of the abuse it would go through, assuming that even avoided all the ditches and trees it saw along the way.

Not the point! Electric and hybrid vehicles used to be symbols of the redefinition of "performance"--from a car's good cornering and acceleration/braking abilities, to its high miles per gallon and low CO2 emissions. However, in the proper configurations, they have become better than the gas-only cars, on the track! A Tesla is faster than 99% of cars at any speed that you're likely to sample, even on most racetracks, and if you wouldn't gladly sell your soul for a Porsche 918 then you just don't like cars.
