You do realize that "assimilation" is what is meant when we refer to American culture as a "melting pot' right? This is an idea that I and I suspect many of us were taught in 5th grade civics. Your ancestors and all the rest of ours assimilated to varying degrees or we would not now have an American culture which is distinct from the cultures of origin of everyone who came here. Who could have guessed that all of that historical assimilation was really about "control" and that none of our ancestors ever had what you call "freedom."

Unlike others on the left, I don't see "assimilation" as a dirty word. If the idea of multiculturalism is that people can hold on to unique aspects of their culture of origin, such as how they dress and what they eat, I don't have a problem with that. But when there is a dissimilarity in core values, I think that is a problem. So, for example, when people who immigrate to western countries have rather old world ideas about women and gays, and these old world values don't go away even generations after immigration, that in my opinion IS a problem.

Though Legendkiller's outlook is often nativistic and does seem quite bigoted at times, he isn't entirely wrong here. Liberals are extending the idea of multi-culturism to insist that we must tolerate the intolerance of others. Which is not only a serious problem in and of itself. It is hypocritical. People on the left have no problem criticizing evangelical Christians in America for having antiquated ideas about gays, for example, but if that criticism is turned toward Muslims, then it becomes "racist." Yes, this is a case where the "r" word IS being overused by many on the left. Sorry, but as a liberal, I am NOT duty bound to tolerate a culture that treats women and gays like crap, is pervasively anti-semitic, and believes in theocratic forms of government. These are not traits we "tolerate" among our own Christian fundies here, and I see no reason to tolerate it more when we're talking about Muslims.

None of this means we can generalize these attitudes to every Muslim. It does mean that there is reason to be concerned in the broad sense if such cultures are importing these illiberal core values and they don't seem to be going away.
