Bummer.

Andy Whitfield, who starred in the first season of Starz’ Spartacus: Blood and Sand, has died of non-Hodgkin Lymphoma in Sydney, Australia. Spartacus was the Wales native’s first big break; most of his previous work was in Australian television.

Whitfield was diagnosed 18 months ago while preparing for the second season of Spartacus. Starz announced in January that Liam McIntyre, another Australian actor, would take over the role.

In a statement, Whitfield’s wife Vashti called her husband a “beautiful young warrior who died on a “sunny Sydney morning” in her arms.

“No words to express the depth of such a loss. You will be deeply missed, my brother,” said Spartacus creator Steven DeKnight on Twitter.

That's sad -- I was under the impression that when he left Spartacus, it was for treatment but nothing was life threatening.

RIP

I didn't realize his condition was so bad, and had hoped to see him in another series or film in the future. He was fantastic in the Spartacus series. The new guy has some big shoes to fill.

Cancer sucks.

I do believe that they'll find a cure, eventually.

I DO think that they will find the causes of and cures for many cancers. Also I think that preventative medicine will get better. As will prediagnosis. People will be able to get their own genome sequenced and they will be able to tell you the types of cancers that you are most susceptible too and what environmental aggravators to stay away from. Still cancer isn't a single disease. It's a whole family of diseases. I'm not sure we will ever have treatments for all the different varieties.
