Bummer. I watched the 1st and 2nd season and was looking forward to the 3rd with him in it.

Part of the reason for the 2nd season was that he was already sick, and they couldn't carry on with what will be the 3rd season. Since they had all the actors paid for and everything ready to go, they put together 'gods of the arena' aka season 2, to tell the history of the gladiators before Spartacus got there. Had Andy not gotten sick, that season wouldn't have been made.

yup, and they announced that there is a new actor playing his character in season 3 quite some time ago, and that he was totally done with the spartacus series because of his health.

give it another 100 years, we will wipe them out as we have with so many diseases in the past.

That's sad -- I was under the impression that when he left Spartacus, it was for treatment but nothing was life threatening.

I can't believe this....I was under the same impression. I knew he had to give up the role to someone else for the coming season, but I thought it was only because he didn't want production to be delayed. I'm shocked.

In memory of him and the show I was wondering if people wanted to throw out their favorite scene of Andy Whitfield in Spartacus Blood and Sand

I will always have the image of one of my favorite scenes at the end of season 1 when Crixus finally realizes Batiatus is out to screw him and taps his shield for Spartacus and gives him the sign. Then Spartacus jumps off the shield and flies through the air trying to get Batiatus but ends up nailing the roman in the back of the head!!

That kind of puts a damper on the new season :(

Yea, when it does the side shot of him leaping through the air it reminded me of 'air jordan' except with a sword.

Wow this guy looked to be in pretty good shape. Mario Lemieux got Hodgkin's disease and survived it.

According to the wiki Page survival rate is more than 90% for any stages. This guy was really unlucky.

I'm been trying to find more details on his treatment as well. I heard Hodgkins was a pretty survivable form of cancer if caught soon enough. So it would be interesting to find out more about his treatment. I remember awhile back that he had a relapse hence why Starz got a replacement actor... but I'm foggy on the details.

RIP Andy... was really looking forward to seeing you come back to the show. It wasn't the same without ya.

Edit: the news of his relapse

I can almost imagine what he may have felt on finding out of the relapse.. I had a similar instance where I thought I had beat beat my heart condition to only find out a few months later, I had a relapse and needed another surgery. Major downer... :(

It's been a while since I've watched this show, but I really liked the scene where he is forced to "finish off" his best friend (blond guy, forget his name) just to please that kid. It was a very intense and sad scene.
