You guys know Google Voice also included AI learning and adapts to your voice right? Has for quite a while. There was actually some privacy criticism over it because it sent a lot of that information to Google. Nobody cares about privacy any more though.

Read my earlier post. Google Voice Search already does this. I just tried it on my OG Droid by saying "Wake me up in 2 hours" and it set an alarm for 2 hours from now.

Well it's really picky in terms of phrases. Siri understands an array of phrases that means the same thing. I said Set my alarm for 6:45 and it failed like 3 times. Then I realized I have to say "Set alarm." I tried the wake me up thing before but I don't recall it working. Maybe it does. Shrug.

I'm curious, why isn't Siri "allowed" to open other apps? Seemingly even Apple apps? It seems like it easily could do it, but Apple doesn't allow it to?

Why would that be, and what possible motive could Apple have for that? The ability to while in the car say "Open Pandora" or some traffic application is a basic function I actually use voice control for. Not having it would defeat a good 50% of the whole point of using voice control.

Obligatory: I'm not trying to bust on Siri, just asking what the reasoning behind keeping it from opening apps could possibly be.

Does anyone else feel like a complete berk when using voice recognition stuff?

I can just about get away with it in the car but anywhere else no.

I'm just wondering if this is a cultural thing? :D

Definitely only in the car for me. Anywhere else and yeah, I feel like the epitome of "moron talking to his phone".

Yeah its weird. Theres nothing odd about talking to your phone, thats what they are for. Its when theres no one on the other end I feel like a tit, and theres no way anyone else could know I'm talking to a virtual assistant that only understands about half of what I am saying.

I tried the "set my alarm for 6:45am" thing. It told me I don't have an alarm app on my phone, would you like to go to the Market and get one?
I said, "Yes."

It opened Market and called up AlarmClock Plus, announcing 'this one should work fine'. I downloaded it, and the assistant set an alarm for 6:45am.

i did the same, it told me i didnt have an alarm app and i said no. i tried it again right after and it worked with the alarms & timers app that is already on the phone. weird. the "wake me up in 2 hours" works fine as well. showed my mom how to do it on her thunderbolt and she was happy.

Uhh, it gave me a google search of "set my alarm for 645 am"

so it clearly picked up everything I said, but it's not a known action phrase

Ddi you change the default alarm/clock app from stock? It may trip up on that.

Ironically tho, this app, when I ask to play a music file, actually opened up PowerAmp. I thought it would open up the stock music player app.

It should open any music app you have set as your own default.

Yeah, I noticed afterwards that I did have alarm & timer stock app already on my phone as well. I've never used an alarm on my phone, so I'm guessing it just doesn't register as default. Anyway, actually kind of like AlarmClock plus better anyway now that I've messed with it- it actually made a pretty good recommendation.

Much as I hate to admit it, it does seem to work well.

"set my alarm for 6:45"
"what's the weather like"
"make a note"
"play the ramones"
"find me a pizza restaurant "
"navigate to mums"

all worked perfectly first time, which if you've heard my accent is quite an achievement.

I still doubt I'll use it much though.

Just going to see how it copes with "find me some donkey porn"

Edit: Lol, not to keen on that.

If I knew what a berk was, I'd likely feel the same. I definitely can't stand having to talk to those voice recognition telephone answering systems that so many corporations have been using for years.

I don't have any voice recognition stuff on my phone yet, but when I do, I could see myself using it mostly in the car. OR if I find that it really speeds up performing basic tasks, I might get over feeling like an idiot talking to my phone, and start using it a lot.

Wake me up in 2 hours worked.

Also has anyone been using this for a while? Has it improved? Since it's all on the cloud, I imagine Google engineers can make it recognize more commands over time?
