Android vs. iphone

I'm a little confused maybe you guys can straighten me out.

I see everywhere ads for iphone apps. Seems like iphone has a lot more apps than android. But I'm under the (possibly wrong) impression that android has a higher market share? In other words there are more android users than iphone. Shouldn't the developers be coding more for the larger user base and not the smaller one?

Eh, both at this point have basically infinite apps on the phone. iPad still has a significant advantage over HC.

Apple's target demo is people who are willing to spend money for pretty much anything. (The Apple fan view of this is that they're affluent. The Apple non-fan view is that they're gullible.) So devs know you can extract money from them.

Maybe there's more money to be made in iOS development? Maybe it's easier to code for, debug, or support apps that run on iOS than Android? Maybe you just have a lot of confirmation bias? Maybe Android apps are advertised in a medium that you don't use or use often? Maybe advertising is not proportional to market share? Maybe Android apps don't need advertising to sell?

All true and, Android is fragmented with several versions out and not all apps run on all phones/tablets. That being said there are still enough usable apps to keep people interested, the phones appear to work well enough at a price much cheaper than Apple..

The Android OS has a fragmentation issue, it's not a deal killer, but makes it more difficult to get the same experience on different versions of Android.

I know a ton of Android users that have never used the app store or even know what it is.

It's a lot cheaper to develop for ios than android due to easier testing and less hardware to optimize for. Every generation of apple stuff is the same CPU and gpu.

And the crazy google system of installing to sd card doesn't help


And if you look at the top 10 lists iOS is real apps and android is stuff like launcher pro and live wallpaper

Wow the apple people are out tonight. Why do we get these threads non stop? Yes we know apple people pay more for apps. There is no question to that and even some devs have said they recommend to do free to play version because they make more off ad's then they do selling the game.

I also love how people ohhhh the top app is root explorer, launcher pro etc... what does that tell you... It tells you people love to customize and that isn't an option with iOS. You are comparing 2 different platforms. People like to customize which is why the top selling apps are for customization. People don't have that option for apple so of course they can't be top apps.

Both have tons of apps, pick the platform that works for you.

Hey I'm not complaiing, if I have to tinker with an Andriod Tablet to get it to where I like so be it, I'd rather eat dog poo than shell out $599 to Apple for a tablet with $250 worth of hardware..

Enough with your BS already. Since the iOS inception, Apple has cherrypicked the most affluent customers purposely avoiding the markets they didn't deem worthy of the iOS. What's next, you are going to claim that the portion of affluent customers that use Android phones suddenly become cheap when they pick up an Android?

Never mind the different approach that Android took and the reasoning behind it. You are butt hurt because you made a bad choice in the past and now u weave your anti Android agenda throughout your threads. Aww, big deal.

I have spent $174.50 on Android apps since 03/2011, $0 on winmo phones and ~ $ 70 on iOS apps before that...

I'm honestly not sure if you're serious or not, I don't hate Android, I'm just not using an Android phone at the moment. I do have and use a nook color and have a Fire pre ordered, and I have my daughter & her fiancee on Android phones.

i don't believe that for a second, there is a market icon/widget on the main home screen of every phone when you get it out of the box and it says "click me for aps" or some crap.

you would have to manually delete it from the screen and it woudl mean they used nothing but what came on their phone


now if you had said you knew people who had no idea what the amazon ap store was i would have no issues with that statement

, not sure where that rant came from but pliable is right. There was even a study done that confirmed this, far more is spent in the apple app store than the android market. hench why a lot of apps on android these days include ad's.

I admit I fall into this, I think I've bought 1 app. I like my free apps :awe:. Therefore on free versions I don't mind so much if they include ads, long as they aren't terribly intrusive. Apps I pay for better be ad free or bad rating.

I don't know. I've had the originally iPad almost since launch and I've downloaded a dozen apps at most and only use one or two with any amount of regularity. For me, the majority of the appeal comes from the base functionality.

I think there are plenty of people out there who aren't interested in apps in the slightest. The base functionality of the device is either good enough for them or suits their needs adequately. Also, some Android phones come with a lot of stock apps, so there's even less incentive for some users to get something else.

You need to factor in how many women I know with Android phones, particularly older ones

It's pretty simple. iOS is spread amongst a few devices, whereas Android has a much greater variety of devices. This makes iOS easier to develop and optimize for. Add that on to the greater willingness to pay for apps by iOS users, and you've got your reason.

My older cousin uses iPhone4 and he didn't even know about the App store. So there are people who use these devices stock without knowing you can actually add and install apps. Sounds crazy, doesn't it?

I went over to his house to install JB AppleTV for him. He also had iPad1 still unopened he got as a gift almost a year ago. He had zero clue about the App Store, didn't have iTunes installed and was on the original firmware for IP4. I had him make an account, updated the devices, showed him how to use the App store and installed Air Video app so he could play the movies on the iPad and AirPlay the videos to his TV. I had him open the iPad so he could Air Video Wiggles videos for his two year old.

I don't know if he used the App store since. I doubt it.

Since early 2009 I've downloaded over 1300 apps from the app store. 99% or so free
