I have another opinion here. I think Samsung has managed to integrate the Android OS very nice. They are the no1 so far when it comes to Android platform although HTC isn't doing to bad themselves!

Yes, though there's an Android market. The Samsung GPU helps with games -- though it never goes from playable to not playable, since even the Playstation phone will be slower than the Samsung -- and the Super AMOLED screen is always a plus. I was linking to new in box eBay auctions -- you should have full manuf. warranty, plus eBay/Paypal is quite buyer-friendly if there's an initial screwup. But a smart HowardForum guy may be able to give you the phone pre-unlocked with Froyo (the latest OS, not official yet on the AT&T Captivate), etc...

The thing is, AT&T is a huge customer base, so there's a lot more Captivates floating around than any other 850/1900 Android. If you're interested in Apple, wait for the flood of iPhone 4 users who flee to Verizon next week.

The OEM 850/1900 Galaxy S is out too. Sure AT&T is huge but there's a lot of 850/1900 networks out there: Thailand, Brazil, LatAm, Australia...

I think it might be cheaper sometimes to import the OEM Galaxy S. Shrug. It's probably even, but in Canada you might get luck from eBay, so a Captivate is a pretty good bet.

HTC Desire (Inspire in North America)
Samsung Galaxy S (Captivate in North America)

best mid-range:

HTC Willdfire
Samsung Galaxy 3/i5800

The mid-range models cost less, but still have good functionality.

And let's not forget the Samsung Gal S 2 that is among the best on the market.

went from a 3GS to HTC Inspire. the HTC takes better quality pictures, but the camera on the iphone is a lot faster. i used to snap dozens of pictures of my son playing and just pick the best one. almost like the professional photographers do it. impossible on the android
