I realize you can root many phones to get around this, but I'm curious about which carriers and manufacturers (if any) still block you from side-loading APKs?
I have an AT&T HTC One and it's just a checkbox in the setting that allows installation from 'unknown sources'.
I remember back in 2010 with my Dell Streak (which was also an AT&T version, although no physical AT&T 'brand' actually visible) this setting was hidden by default, but I only needed to type in some service code to show it, no rooting was needed.
