Gotten addicted to a cell phone, mad addicted.

Rooted my Droid, tried out the Sholes.info ROM, currently using Bugless Beast. Overclocked to 950mhz (could go 1ghz, some ROMs have kernels that offer even higher OCs, no need to push it insane imho).

Ooooo.

Problem? Well, just like I did with my Samsung Omnia... once I enter into this software modding game, there's no turning back. Never fulfilled, always wanting the latest new things.

Didn't get into it until now because I wanted to wait until the developers were releasing more mature and stable ROMs. Rely a lot on my phone now that I bow down to Google, so I wanted to keep the phone reliable.

This is both glorious and painstaking. Now that all the little things I've ever wanted to have done CAN be done (in progress: getting all widgets to have the exact same look. Might take awhile), there's definitely no going back.

Anyone else share this love/hate relationship with modding addiction? :D

Meh. I HardSPL'd my Wing a hundred years ago, but I haven't bothered to do anything with my mytouch3g.

I just don't feel the need anymore. Note that when you root android, you're pretty much completely bypassing the OSes built in security. Android is linux. You need to have exactly the same security consciousness you would with a full-blown PC when you root.

Oh I understand that fully.
I just like customization, and the Android platform is insanely capable, and well... I want to take advantage of all those capabilities. Just like I would a computer.

The phone is basically a mini computer and yup, need to treat it as if it were one. Thankfully just like the Mac world, if you want to truly have success with malware of some sort, you go for the larger markets.

Not really sure which is a larger market - a jailbroke iPhone or rooted Android.
Either way, definitely have to be conscious. Linux isn't super secure, it can be cracked with effort, but effort is invested with the hope of reward which comes from how wide of an impact is possible.

I'm not bragging or anything so don't get me wrong. Rooting Android isn't exactly rocket science nor a new feat. Just stating how I readily accept my modding addiction. Doesn't matter the device, if there isn't any risk of real harm (losing capable to do normal activities for instance), I'll probably mod it.

Same here. I had spent years with WM playing the flashing game. I took a sabitical with BB and then the Pre. Now I am back with the Hero and had it rooted and flashed the second day I had. Now I have moved from Fresh to Gumbo and stripped out Sense. It is addicting.

I love my G1 all over again after rooting it and installing a Cyanogen ROM. Am hoping he integrates the latest overclock into the next build.

I don't even feel it's my phone till it's been modded, or jailbroken/unlocked, etc...

Nice, just rooted my Droid the other day, running Bugless Beast with the 1Ghz overclock. 100% stable, and with setCpu and the Cpu speed profiles my battery is about the same (have it underclock when idle).

It's nice not having to wait for 2.1 for the new widgets/ modified apps

The speed of that thing has me so jealous. The Hero is a turd but the mods make it liveable. I just hope the supersonic isn't a pipe dream.

Did you perform a clean wipe and use the 'nandroid restore' flash route?

I used the upgrade route for the sholes.info ROM (2.0.3), and then decided to use the upgrade.zip route again to move to Bugless Beast 0.7.5.
I'm thinking I should have wiped between the two ROMs. The way I am starting to look at it, the upgrade.zip route is perfect when sticking to the same ROM because the developer has things a certain way, filesystem discrepancies likely won't happen.

I think a few of the FCs I've been getting are due to that very issue.
First I'll try using my nandroid backup pre-Sholes flash, then upgrade.zip for BB, and if I still get issues I'll use the nandroid restore route for BB.
I really, really hate redoing settings and configurations for various apps.

Re-installing the apps wouldn't be much of a chore, just the configuration of said apps. I did backup all my apps with Astro so I wouldn't need to worry about waiting to re-download all the apps.

Tempted to do this as well. It's sort of frustrating after Motorola botched their release with that PR mess.

The first rule of Android rooting is don't talk about Android rooting.

Especially when Eris owners like myself are in the thread. :(

ahh, it will happen. I think HTC said the Eris was getting some 2.0/2.1 loving sometime soon. I think.
But I am sure some genius bastard will root it.
I was screwing around with one in the store. I think it was an un-molested one because it didn't seem slow like many complain about. I actually like it's form factor. Very pocket-able compared to the Droid.

I'm running Android (Donut) on my Sprint Touch (a 2 year-old WinMo phone). Even on a phone not designed for Android at all, it's much better than WinMo (except the Exchange support, but that's to be expected :p).

Without root this wouldn't be possible at all, so I'm glad for it!

I did it through using the Update.zip method with Bugless Beast, no backup. Didn't try out sholes but I know that BB and Sholes use different file structures somewhat so yea that could be what is happening to you.

Heh, I went and did that anyway.

Used the nandroid backup from before everything, apparently kept the root but removed the Recovery (new one), so I downloaded DroidRootPro and flashed the recovery and then used the upgrade.zip from there.

Working like a charm now. :)
Now working on figuring out how to do some other stuff, like applying themes to specific apps that weren't included in the theme. I want Facebook, Pure Calendar and Pure Grid Calendar, and FeedR widgets glassed!

I went through the exact same phases as you but now I'm over it. Been running bugless beauty at 950 mhz for a week+ now.

Am too lazy to look, but can you flash and restore if there are warranty issues?

Its finally getting to the point where Droid rooting is worth it. Cyanogen on the G1 was just an absolutely bulletproof ROM - faster, more stable, cleaner, more options than stock. Sholes.info is getting to that point with Droid. I've been flashing it, and going back to stock a few hours later, consistently since December or so. I've actually had 2.0.5 on here since it was released on 2/15, it had some "teething" issues that have gone away. I like it so far.

so far, on the nexus one, it is not possible to relock/restore the bootloader (google provided an official way to unlock this time around)

on the g1 i believe it is possible to go back to stock, but i've never tried.

I thought nothing worked with the Omnia? Me brother is giving me his phone, and I planned on rooting it with Android, but I keep finding sites that say it can be installed, but that's all that will happen. It won't have support for the microphone, speaker, GPS, accelerometer, etc.

While there have been attempts to get Android functioning properly on the Omnia, I actually think he was referring more to getting a good WinMo ROM.

hanoverphist:
try here

I always got my Omnia ROMs there. i910 is Verizon, i900 is whatever other carrier had it.

There were some really nice ROMs. I tended to keep to BlazingWolf's releases, but he moved to the Droid when it came out too. I had to make a comment to him and laugh when I saw he was posting on modaco's droid section. Though he said he probably won't be making any ROMs for Android, and if he did it wouldn't be for awhile as he would need to learn the system.

At the time the 6.5 ROMs were flowing like mad, all "beta" releases and they kept releasing new updates based on new beta build numbers, was flashing quite often.

Quite a few in the Summer and Fall had that Home interface that was rather Zune-inspired.

Can you folks share some links to guides and resources for this stuff? I looked for Droid rooting stuff, found a thread on an Android forum, but seems a lot of people posting in the past few weeks were having trouble.

I would be interested in tethering and overclocking in particular. What other cool shit can I do with this stuff?
