If I'm in a 2 year contract, it's reasonable imho for me to think I should get updates to the OS for those 2 years. Especially when my phones plenty powerful enough to run them. Do I care about facial unlock? not a bit, but there are things in ICS I would like without having to installed a hacked rom. A phone that's a year old really isn't old in my eyes. There are people still in a contract who have a phone that ICS won't be released for. And they'll RUN out and buy a new phone when ICS hits the market so they can get facial unlock. It's sad Google doesn't force HTC/Samsung/Moto to provide updates to their customers. Should a 1.6 device get ICS? hell no, but something that shipped with 2.1 or 2.2 should. If I listen to HTC & Google my Evo 4G's ancient and needs to be upgraded.

People talk about how evil and money grubby Apple is but their phones get updates far longer than Android handsets. And ICS will have a lot more than 'facial unlock' as you put it. But I'll never know unless I decide to hack ICS on my phone. Somehow in the eyes of a Fandroid dude that's a plus though "it's open! you can do what you want! r0x0rs my b0x0rs!" Only online would having to hack something to an update be better than a simple OTA. But again since you think ICS is lame I'm sure you think people who expect their 12 month old phone to get it who won't as lame too.

If you buy a new laptop from Dell, and sign up for wireless networking through Verizon, does that mean MS owes you the next version of Windows free? Actually, that comparison doesn't even work because Google does give it away for free, it's a question on if the vendor is going to use it or not.

I can think of a better way to put this for the iOS users out there that don't understand why Android users don't care all that much- tell me what ICS has that my phone right now, as it sits, doesn't have. What does it do that my phone doesn't do? Tell me why I should be anxious for ICS outside of simple geek curiosity.

AV companies do a good job of fooling people into believing they need them.

I have never found a need to install AV on my phone. That's what common sense is for.

What about zero day exploits? Is there common sense for that? Yeah, it's nice to get the extra features and what not, but there's still the problem of security updates. Why does Microsoft keep pushing security updates to XP users?

From what I've seen ICS is a huge step up from Froyo/Gingerbread. Some of the stuff that I think are major improvements that a Froyo/Gingerbread device doesn't have right now:

1) Performance is supposed to be significantly improved
2) Better folder management
3) Face unlock
4) Built-in photo editing
5) Panorama picture mode
6) Better more cohesive interface design
7) Live voice dictation
8) Better multi-tasking/app switcher
9) Mobile-data management - especially useful for those not on unlimited plans
10) Resizable widgets
11) Better browser that lets you switch easier to full-site mode
12) Much better copy/paste than Gingerbread/Froyo
13) Device encryption

I can only assume that he means it adds more functionality and manipulation to folders.

It also has better hardware acceleration, which is very nice for those with overpowered/underutilized devices.

The folder setup in ICS is way better than previous versions. Like iOS you can create a folder just by dragging an app on to another app, and you get the little icon previews on the folder like iOS as well. You can also drop folders into the dock. Currently all you get is a crappy looking folder icon.

I already do all of this using GoLauncher. Again, I'm not putting down ICS adding any of this natively or anyone wanting it on a new phone. Just practically speaking, I already have it.

I don't understand what point you're trying to get at if you're not trying to put down ICS or the people who crave it.

I'm sure you could get the entire phone to look and have most of the features if you put in a good amount of effort, or you could just get a simple update.

That's because it seems to me you're trying to be combative, and maybe have a bit of emotional attachment to all this, when I don't.

The point was pretty clear- I'm not all amped about getting an update for something I already have, and a lot of people probably are made to believe their phone is suddenly worthless because it doesn't have some update that they don't even know what it does for them.

Classic example: the facial unlock thing is probably pretty useless on any phone that doesn't have a forward facing camera.

BUT I MUST HAVE IT ON MY DX RIGHT THIS INSTANT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've already said several times, I'll probably like ICS and be glad to have it on a new phone. There's nothing I've yet seen that it will add any missing function to my DX though, so I don't really much care if it gets updated to ICS or not. In short, I don't suffer from this latest/greatest syndrome that I think some people are caught up in if they really lose sleep over stuff like this.

I'm sure you could get the entire phone to look and have most of the features if you put in a good amount of effort, or you could just get a simple update.

You're vastly overstating the usual Android updates. None so far has added so many features it made 3rd party customizations pointless- in fact, many Android users probably wouldn't want updates to do that, because people enjoy that they can customize the phone to their own liking, not have the same experience on every phone.

Still can't comprehend what you're getting at, sorry.

Okay, you're not hyped for ICS; but a lot of people are.

Do some people want to be updated to the latest version of whatever without knowing exactly what it adds? Yes, but theirs nothing wrong with that; as a consumer you expect your software devices to get supported and to be up to date with all the latest features. Anything less is simply unsatisfactory.
