Vibrant without a doubt. Vibrant/ Galaxy S is the best android phone out right now. It's better than Nexus One, Evo, Droid X, Incredible, etc. It's the fastest with best gpu, best screen, and is the lightest and thinnest phone. It supports pretty much all popular video codecs out the box which is real nice compared to other android phones. Samsung Touchwiz 3.0 actually has some real nice features built in.

Samsung released this phone in over 110 different countries so it will be supported by Samsung and the mod community. It's already been rooted and the bootloader isn't locked so you should see custom roms soon.

I can vouch for this. I recently upgraded from the Nexus One to the Vibrant and the biggest difference for me has been the screen. The comparison is like night and day. I like to keep the brightnessas low as it will go to save battery and thye Nexus One was unreadable in direct sunlight while the Vibrant is well... vibrant. I can also notice the difference in 3d games, it runs much smoother and the colors are richer. Touchwiz UI is ok, I switch up between Touchwiz and Launcher Pro to change things up once and a while.

I think most of the bad press about Samsung phones comes from the lack of promised updates. I think that the modding community will take good care of that though, even if Samsung doesn't come through with it's September 2.2 update.

galaxy s users: does your GPS work? Ive had my captivate since the 18th and its maybe worked twice for me, and even then it wasnt that accurate. I keep waiting for a fix but im starting to get worried that if it doesnt come out in the next month or 2, samsung is just gonna bank on people buying the S2 and not worry about ever fixing the problem. The S2's specs are ridiculous from what ive seen.

AGPS is a known issue. Engadget just posted an article on it today.

I saw that thread. While I'm intruiged, frankly, that theme is hideous. I'm hoping for an updated darkstone build soon.

Dont be fool by the screen shots.
Its a very slight variation of the stock Froyo.
Basically the only difference is that you can rotat the bottom dock to 2-5 screens. You can import what ever icons you want in the dock(not just the ugly iphone icons).
I also like some of the widgets are now transparent.
The news and weather widget is transparent.
Theres a simple date/clock widget thats also trans.
There might be more to the theming but I haven't mess with it enough.
Overall, I think its more pleasant to look at.
(that guy just got some weird color combo going on).

I've been messing with it for about 2 hrs now and I think its an improvement over Darkstone.
- A few other stuff are working now.
- I think battery life is a little better but I don't know that for a fact.
- I still get robotic voices with calls. I will have to get a diffrent ROM is I want this poblem solved.
- I have to push the power button(or hold it down) to get it off sleep vs Darkstone where I can press any button.
- Lately I've been getting the screen of death on reboot with Darkstone 2 out of 3 so I hope this build solve that problem.
Gonna play with it some more.

I just tried the latest build(mattc) with the newest image #103. Works pretty well on my class1 sd card, ignoring the lag. The robotic voices are supposed to be fixable by using a different WM ROM, but I'm not going that far for Android yet.

Overall great progress by everybody working on it.

Had the option to pick up a HD2 yesterday for $160. I was very tempted for this reason, but couldn't pull the trigger. Definitely nice to see the community modding away though!

I just put myself on a waiting list for 3 EVO's on a family plan, will likely port everything over next month, I'm really going to miss hacking TMO phones 🙁

What ROM are you using? I've yet to run into the robotic voice issue.

Stock WM ROM. WM ROM is configured the way I like it so I'm probably not going to change it. Hopefully the robotic voice issue can be resolved another way besides changing the WM ROM.

I remember you or someone else used NRG, and that ROM doesn't have issues with robotic voice.

Unfortunately, TMobile doesn't have any killer phones out there, Samsung has a bad rep as a phone manufacturer, not quite sure why, but it's enough to make me a bit wary...

Because Samsung promised us TMO Behold 2 users that we would be getting android 2.0. They had commercials and everything, but they said nope a few months after tons of people bought Behold 2s (me included) and only gave us android 1.6, which is meh. So that is why many TMO customers hate/distrust/willneversupport samsung. 🙂

Yea I'm using energy. I did use it with the latest stock ROM for a little while, but its fully possible I didn't make any voice calls during that time frame. I don't make many of them.

Yeah, seems like you will get robotic voice with tmo roms.
I'm holding out to see if they can get this problem fixed without me having to flash to another roms. Or if someone finally come out with a build that I love, I'll flash it.

Damm, I would have grab that in a heartbeat.
Its insane to think that HD2 can be had for $200 if you look hard enough.
We all know WM is crap but even as a multimedia device, its dirt cheap.
Web surfing, picture viewer, movie player, music player, organizer, book reader, GPS. More that I can't think of
Theres nothing out in the market that you can get for $200 with that capability.

That is so sad that we are losing another HD2 user.
Are you going to sell it ?? Or keep it around to play with it ??

I have 2, am swapping one for a mint Incredible with a clean ESN tomorrow, will sell the other one on eBay when I switch over to Sprint...

I definitely agree. WM is a powerful OS with good applications for it (just have to find them). Especially WM on the HD2 hardware. 🙂 If I didn't already have an HD2, I would get one used.

I'm trying out Android 2.2 on the HD2 for the day. There aren't any bugs that I'm run into yet. Though, I'm pretty tempted to switch back to WM just so I can do my regular stuff. A nice ereader by 'Alreader 2' would be good to find for Android right now.

goddamit. Well even if samsung decides to bail on 2.2 for the galaxy phones im hoping the modding community will come through. was the behold 2 a popular phone? why wasnt version 2.0 released by modders?

The Behold 2 was probably the best Android hardware on T-Mobile before the superphones (Nexus One, Galaxy S, etc... ) Samsung wouldn't release the source code to the drivers needed to for 1.6+ ROMs. See http://forum.androidspin.com/showthread.php?t=2761 so no 2.X ROMs were not able to be created.

Found a video, the dual function of the home icon was freaking me out, I love this rom, it's the Max Sense Energy...

This really makes me wanna return my captivate and either go with a nexus one or wait until another decent andriod phone comes out on ATT.

Im praying for 2.2 but who knows if that'll happen, and im thinking 3.0 will be out of the question. Also i dont have high expectations for the GPS unit to start working.

They already announced Galaxy S 2.2 updates in Sept.
Can we stick to talking about HD2 on this thread.

August Froyo build is out: http://gamesquare.co.uk/froyostone.htm

- Two different builds based on the same Official FroYo 2.2 Update for HTC Desire. One build does not use HTC Sense (just has HTC Skin) apart from some applications. The other has complete HTC Sense.
- Both builds have the same functionality, just different interfaces. The speed of both builds are very fast, DO NOT BE BIASED!
- Camcorder is now working with HTC Camera, though 720p capture is still yet to be implemented. WVGA video capture works fine.
- Speed optimizations have been done to ensure a nice speed boost. Try out NeoCore and Quadrant after running Advanced Task Killer. The results should be similar to the Nexus One and HTC Desire.
- Flashlight app now works, the app is included in both builds. Light only works at brightest setting so far.
- Data.img has been increased to 512mb.
- Memory has been increased to 384mb.
- GPS is working.
- Bluetooth is working. (I have not tested HID devices or BT Headsets)
- All apps will now function and install correctly. If you have an issue installing an app from the Android Market or another source, then go through the following steps:
- Go to Settings > SD & phone storage > Unmount SD card
- Now install your app, it will now install correctly and function fine
- Go to Settings > SD & phone storage > Mount SD card
A proper solution will be worked on.

I was getting near Nexus One speeds out of the last version, I've decided to keep TMobile as a provider as a result of these ROMs, the dev's have done some amazing work.

I have a feeling that we're going to see Android hacked into more and more devices just because people can. It's pretty crazy to think people just do this in their free time (usually).
