I just got a new phone, a Blackberry DTEK50, I noticed that internal storage shows I'm using 7.45GB / 16GB. how is it so high already? When I click on it, I just get an entry for Apps, showing 753MB of usage, and cached data, showing 20MB used. Where is all the rest? Why is it not showing more details? I saw a screenshot of this section online and there was way more options like "other data" etc. There is a SD card in the phone too, but that shows separately and the usage looks legit. 322MB, and when I click it shows more option categories like apps, images, videos etc. There is also an explore option, which does not show up for internal storage.

On similar subject, is there a way to also encrypt the SD card?

The operating system is taking up the rest. This is why you avoid 8gb phones at all cost. You get just a little over 1gb of free space and chrome and facebook will take all of that by themselves.

Oh wow, I would have figured that would go under "apps". So I guess from this point on I probably do have a decent amount of space left then as the actual apps are only using a tiny fraction of that.

Make sure that the camera and storage intensive apps like Google play music (and the like) are set to use the sdcard.

It's a new phone so not much as far as actual data but the part that gets me is the fact that it does not even tell me what's using up all that space. I should be seeing way more options there but I only see "apps" and "cached data". According to googling there should be more options that show up so I can see what's using space.

This is all I see:

the options enabled in these windows can change depending on the front end the phone maker used. Try a 3rd party app.
