Android-based alternatives to the iPod Touch?

I had an iPod Touch for a while and liked it except for its integration with iTunes and the lack of a microSD expansion slot. Are there any Android-based alternatives to it? I don't need a smartphone as I'm frequently near a WiFi hotspot and when I'm not, I have Whispernet on my Kindle for basic web access.

I poked around online and found the Samsung Galaxy Player 50, but it's pretty inferior hardware-wise, and it's even more expensive than the Touch once I import it since it's apparently not available in the US.

The 5 looks great. Looks like it's everything the Touch is plus the features I want - as well as being big enough to be a viable ereader... How long until it's released in the US? :D
Who knows. Both the 4.0 and 5.0 models were up for presale at BestBuy.com and Amazon.com in late May (only the 8GB versions AFAIK), but were pulled off the sites the next day and have yet to return. Samsung had them listed on their US site briefly as well, but also yanked them quickly. I wouldn't put money on these players coming to the US anytime soon, if ever. With Archos only releasing 7" and larger Android tablets for Generation 9, there really are no other good or even mediocre options to the iPod Touch on the US horizon. Since my Rockboxed Toshiba Gigabeat F40 is starting to have battery issues, I may end up having to do some importing of something soon. I just wish that the Freemyipod hacking projects were being extended to the Touch line as well (though they reportedly did a trial run on a Touch 2G with a little success).

Archos has some ~3-5 in. android mp3 players/tablets. Not sure about the quality but I got the impression they were improving from previous versions at least.. Although last time I looked at them a year ago unfortunately the smaller models (3-5 in) had resistive touchscreens.

I haven't used one myself, but the Archos 43 might be what you're looking for. It has a 4.3" screen, runs Android, and has a microSD slot. It's also fairly inexpensive at $180. It probably doesn't have as good of a build quality as the Samsung device, but it's a lot cheaper.

Then again, if your main problem with the iPod is iTunes, there are several other software apps that can sync music to an iPod. Wikipedia has a pretty good list that compares the different features and OS availability for them.

considering the music playing software on android is... rubbish.... lol. ok well music 3.0 is half decent, but that's only because the earlier versions were so bad

I upgraded to the new music player, and had to remove it. It wouldn't skip properly through tracks. At least the one on stock gingerbread (2.3.3) will do that correctly.

Never understood this. Why is is rubbish? It plays music in desired formats just as well as any other phone/tablet out there.

Samsung's model is pretty solid, though the Archos 28, 32, and 43 aren't bad either.
