Since its inception, Google's (GOOG) Android Market Place has generated about 7% of the gross revenue of Apple's App Store.

Apple (AAPL) has about 85% to 90% market share of the total dollars spent on mobile apps.
Only 1.3% of Android apps are paid, compared with 13.5% of iPhone's.

Apple developers have made more than $3.4 billion since 2011, compared with less than $240 million for Google developers.

Although Android is likely to grow its smartphone market share faster, Apple will probably maintain a 70%+ share of mobile app dollars spent over the next 3 or 4 years.

So it looks like quality developers will continue to target iOS as their uses actually generate them revenue while Android will continue to grow its marketshare in undesirable markets.

I locked it. While there were several good posts in this thread, there's also a whole lot of pointless sniping back and forth. We have theseApple vs. iOS threads all the time, and a couple of people have complained about them - but the truth is that I know that I personally learn stuff from them. For instance I had no idea that there were free paid-app-of-the-day on iTunes, and I also didn't know that there was a free song-of-the-day on Amazon - and I had no idea until some people posted about them in this thread. So there's useful stuff, and then... there's also a bunch of petty bickering. I'm locking this because 3 warnings and 2 infractions in 69 posts is enough.

One might ask why I locked this particular thread when we seem to have these sorts of thread more or less continuously and it's because there were several reported posts and a couple of warnings, and the general signal-to-noise ratio was worse than usual. Or maybe it's just been a long day at work and I have less patience than usual.

the great thing is Fandroids think because of the market share Android will catch up, At this rate they'll be lucky to ever have 15% of the app market, they have over 50% of the smart phone market but barely over 5% of the app money? Wow that's hard fail

Yeah, Apple has nothing to worry about here. I'm not a big cooperation but if I was I'd take the app money over a market share that'll never lead to the same level of $$$ flowing in.

I did my part to help Google by dropping about $100 in the Marketplace, but apparently my efforts were for naught.

Who cares. I had an iPhone and now an Android phone. Neither company got money from me from their app market.

It's no secret that Apple pioneered the smartphone revolution. This obvious lead is reflected when you compare market totals since launch...

Article proves just two things. 1) That iOS users have to pay for apps that Android users get for free, and 2)that iOS users are more easily parted from their money than Android users.

Also:

Using data from Apple's public announcements and AndroLib (an Android app discovery tool), Piper Jaffray's Gene Munster has analyzed the mobile app market and determined that:

Translation: We took a wild guess and hoped to land somewhere in the state line . . . of Alaska.

Cue the 'different business model' posters...

The difference is much greater than I expected, but there is something to say about Googles ad revenue on all of these "free" apps. Obviously their app store is chalk full of free stuff, but most of the free stuff I've found and started using also has ads integrated. I wonder what Google is making on that end, given that's their bread and butter after all.

If Apple would open up iOS for other phone makers to use they would be the Windows of the smartphone market for 20 years. Thank god they won't do that.

Hope you have something else to keep you busy.
They're a lot slower to respond than the "auto-defend Apple" posters.

I expect the Chief Propaganda Officer© to chime in quickly. Looks like they don't disappoint.

Infraction for mild personal attack
Normally I'd just do a warning for this, but since I posted up a warning about this a couple of days ago, now I'm infracting. Please do not label people specifically, it's a form of mild personal attack.

I'm curious how much developers make on either platform from ad-supported apps.

Didn't the Angry Birds developers say they were now making more money from the ad-supported free Android version than the paid ios version?

Thread title should be renamed: "Apple users are roughly 14 times more stupid than android users"

The majority of my apps are free. Paying for apps is stupid when it's not necessary.

No it's not, otherwise that kind of simple logic would expose the article and the Apple sheep that followed as ignorant fanboyz.

Warning for trolling

None of these claims can be substantiated but what the heck. I read it on the internets. It must be true.

And this is directed at a previous poster, as well as the usual suspects but can we move from flinging around Fandroid, isheep, ifanatic at the drop of a hat? I personally find it distasteful because it's used to skirt the "no name calling" policy. If I disagree with someone or find they are being biased, I say it to them.

New argument:

The depth of an app store does not matter. Once the basics are covered, the rest are just bonuses.

The depth of an app store does not help the non-Apple phone makers. They don't make money off Android apps, they make money on the hardware.

Obviously market depth does not matter to most consumers or Android would not be growing like it has.

In a nutshell.
