. . . At this rate they'll be lucky to ever have 15% of the app market, they have over 50% of the smart phone market but barely over 5% of the app money? Wow that's hard fail

This really doesn't matter to anyone here considering that almost no one on these forums is a developer. Let's try not to turn this into another dick measuring contest.

Article proves just two things. 1) That iOS users have to pay for apps that Android users get for free, and 2)that iOS users are more easily parted from their money than Android users.

Those are some poor conclusions to draw and not supported by any data included in the article. The conclusions you can draw are exactly:

1) A higher percentage of apps purchased on Apple's app store are paid apps.
2) For paid apps, the average sales price is higher on Google's Android Market.

The rest is injecting your own beliefs, which as stated are pretty slanted.

I don't buy many apps on android because a) there aren't any that I feel are worth buying and b) most of the apps I want I can get for free because they are ad supported.

What I want to see is do devs make any money going the ad supported route?

and for getting low quality apps.

LMAO, you guys don't even HAVE some of the apps we get (i.e. tasker). Not to mention some of your built-in apps (i.e. email client) are inferior to what android users get.

Or that the simple Meebo app for iOS is terrible compared to Android.
Thanks Apple. I get to blow up the already crappy Meebo iOS app to 2x on my iPag, yet for Android, i can run it on my phone or my Transformer, and it scales correctly and lets me have a use-able interface on my tablet.

This is just 2 philosophies to a similar problem. One is a direct, you pay and get an app. The other is, you get it, people get to show you an ad, and you keep using your free app, but people still get paid.

1) Probably not true
2) Possibly true. All my android coworkers are extra cheap in terms of apps but are willing to shell out $60 for computer games. Go figure.

50% right ain't bad right?

Isn't tasker paid? Or is everyone pirating it, which goes in line with the android app culture?

Warning for trolling
Accusing all Android users of being pirates is like trolling. Please keep it civil.

I have an Android phone and nearly all of my apps are free. Most of those aren't even ad-supported, although some are.

Do I care that one company makes less money selling apps than another company? No. Do I care that one software platform sells more phones than another software platform? No.

Could you be any more ignorant? Yea Adroid users are all about pirating...

You're like my Dad, he couldn't understand how installing custom ROMs on my nook color was legal.

This forum is turning into complete trash.

It should matter, ad support shit will die out, what happens when that becomes reality? Developers won't make paid app's for a market that's full of "gimme gimme gimme!" people. Also I can go on the Market and download Adfree which will remove ad's from FREE apps that are FREE because of the ad's. I understand Google's market is open, but the fact they allow adfree in the Market is a slap in the face to developers who make money from ad's. How can this kind of shit not matter? It should matter to everyone.10-15 years ago all the rage was free ad supported web hosting, how did that work out? But more than anything in 5 years when everyone blocking ad's on their android phone what incentive will developers have to make anything for the platform?

They won't.

98.7% of apps bought from the android market are free ones
87.5% of apps bought from the iOS market are free ones

So it's generally true that the majority of apps on phones from either OS are free. The question for you is, what type of app would it take for you to shell out some cash? For me the answer is usually games (not angry birds). Dungeon Hunter, Hero of Sparta, Civilization. All good stuff. I still haven't gotten the willpower to shell out cash for the Final Fantasy remakes.

I guess all these developers that are creating the apps are ignorant too.

Edit: Even more Piracy complaints! Up to 90% of their apps being used is the result of piracy. Guess its not a big deal right? http://keyeslabs.com/joomla/projects/screebl/124-the-new-screebl-pro-licensing-features

so Apple App users are generally less-informed and more willing to spend cash on garbage apps than Android users are? Color me shocked.

I am not sure how this is a knock against Android. It would be like saying that Apple sold more copies of Lion than Ubuntu sold of 11.04. Are you apple boys proud of the fact that apple makes more money off of you, than google makes off of their users?

I'd promise not to post at all anymore, but I doubt it would make a dent either way.

Anywho, my thoughts:
iOS might have the best quality apps, but I can get buttloads of good free Android apps if I just dig around. And every day Amazon has one paid app for free and most of them are pretty good. Best part is I can just go ahead and nab it, then download the sucker days or weeks later when I feel like to see if its any good.
If you are willing to work a bit and dig around you can get basically the same function Apple users enjoy but for much cheaper.

Of course as many people point out, sifting through garbage may not be the best use of your time either, especially if some apps are so bad they cause trouble on your system and/or wont uninstall properly. Also, I hate moving junk to my SD card so my next phone will need a minimum of 16GB onboard, ideally 32. The card can be reserved for music and movies.

Thread title should be renamed: "Apple users are roughly 14 times more stupid than android users"

The majority of my apps are free. Paying for apps is stupid when it's not necessary.

Mentality of Android's users like you is the reason devs are staying away from Androids. Everyone knows that.

Actually the apps on iOS are better. I find the apple hate mentality humorous. Apple does something successful, but somehow that just means the users are stupid.

Android has its strengths I give it that, but apps isn't one of them.

Apps are better on iOS. The app market is easier to use on iOS. iOS demands a credit card to even get into the app store. iOS gives developers the most tools to make money from their apps. iOS got tons of good publicity early on with its apps of it being something of a modern gold rush.

I truly think that eventually android store will be just as good and probably even surpass the Apple App store in sales. I just think the culture that google has created on their app store so far needs to change. They cant allow borderline malware (and real malware) on their store. They cant make it so easy to pirate apps. They have to lock it down eventually, which will piss off a lot of the purists on forums like these. It is a necessary step for them. They need to remove the crap and police it so there isn't so much crap on there.

And every day Amazon has one paid app for free

Just wanted to toss in my 2 cents as well. The "free app a day" has been going on in the iOS world for several years now. You just need to download the "free app a day" app to point you to which ones are free so it's a little less obvious than Amazon. And once you "buy" it, it's linked to your account forever so if you want to delete it and get it again later, you will get it back for free. (iOS 5 made it a TON easier to find all the apps you own)

Apps purchased from either the Android market or the Amazon Appstore will remain tied to your account forever and can always be downloaded again too. I think the only exception is if you were to download a free app, uninstall it, and it later becomes a paid app, you would then have to buy it. I've only seen this situation happen once (TouchPal Keyboard was free until the beginning of this month, but they announced that it would be going paid so I kept it despite not using it just in case a future update made it worth using).

One thing I find a little annoying about iOS (although I'll admit this is pretty nitpicky) is that you have to enter your password whenever you download any app, even a free one. That's been my experience using my dad's iPad, at least.

Also the free games on iOS are really really bad compared with free Android games. You're lucky to get an ad-supported trial version, and usually the trial will be so limited it's little more than a tech demo. Free Android games are much more complete. On the other hand, iOS has more and better high-end games. Android also has the problem of several games ONLY having a free ad-supported version - I guess in some cases, developers make so much more from ad revenue than they do from selling the app that they don't even bother selling it.

I hate that too! It's a big pain in the ass especially when you have a long password
